Meet Trailblazer Leah Sullivan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Sullivan.

Leah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for the beauty industry grew very quickly and I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a cosmetologist.

As time went on, I just became more and more obsessed with doing makeup. I remember before I could buy makeup for myself, my mom would always let me take some of hers and I thought it was the best thing ever! I would just sit in my room and play around with different looks, although I wasn’t even sure what I was doing. I remember the first time I tried to do eyeliner. It was actually kind of funny. I would get so frustrated because I just could not get it to look good. Now its second nature to me, and I do it almost everyday.

After high school, I attended Euphoria Institute of Beauty and I graduated a year later with my cosmetology license. It was such an amazing experience and I learned so much! It made my passion and my dream to grow even more.

Since then, I have been working on building my business and making my dreams a reality! Working with local designers doing runways and photoshoots, to making women feel beautiful for any occasion. With so many opportunities, I’m excited to see what the future has waiting for me!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve definitely faced some struggles along the way. There was a time in my life where I was so defeated. I was being so hard on myself because I felt that I wasn’t where I wanted to be. Looking at all these successful makeup artists online and wondering what I was doing wrong. I knew what I wanted but I didn’t know how to get myself out of that awful funk I was in. Thankfully, I have so many supportive friends and family who believe in me, motivated me and now I feel so amazing about where my career is headed.

My advice to anyone just starting out is to be patient. Great things don’t always happen over night. As long as you’re driven, determined and believe in yourself, you can make anything possible!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Leah Marie Beauty – what should we know?
I’m a freelance makeup artist. I do photo shoots, fashion shows, weddings, etc.

I also love the art of special effects makeup. I’ve been self-teaching myself some different techniques so I can open up my career to more opportunities.

I’m so in love with the artistry of makeup, but I’m also in love with making people feel happy and good about themselves. It’s such an amazing feeling that nothing can compare to.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
In general, one of the biggest challenges, female leaders have to face is equality in the workplace. As women, we need to support each other and know our voices can and will be heard. Strive for what you want and never give up!
