Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Moff.
Jen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
From 2011 to 2012, I was going through some major life changes (ending an abusive relationship, graduating college, relocating, reconnecting to Jesus and my spiritual nature), and I started questioning everything about my life; from who I surrounded myself with to what I did for a living. I began realizing that what went through wasn’t just for my own benefit, and I decided to start writing parts of my story down to turn it into a memoir.
Then, on the 4th of July in 2012, I was sunbathing on my back porch in the not-so-glamorous town of Waycross, GA and out of nowhere I heard the phrase, “You are going to take over Tony Robbins job”. The seed was planted.
That Christmas, I was introduced to mindfulness. I must have looked like a caveman who just saw fire for the first time; wide-eyed, curious, and beyond excited. I started researching a ton about it and applying the formal and informal practice into my life.
The following spring, I saw Kristen Hadeed (the founder of Student Maid) speak at a networking event in Gainesville, Florida. After hearing her talk, “The Power of No”, I knew I could be a professional speaker. A background in accounting, she had no experience being on stage and was doing the damn thang. If she could do it, I knew my previous life as an actor would just make it all the easier. I drove home, empowered and energized, thinking through my next steps to make this dream a reality.
Later that year, I was asked by a colleague if I offered to coach. I hadn’t ever before and never considered that being part of my business model, haha. But, I’d been networking and reading and learning so much about business that I shrugged my shoulders and knew this was an opportunity to grow myself, so I said yes!
It’s been five years and my business and I have changed so much. I released my first meditation album on iTunes, published my first book on Amazon, and offered self-directed courses on mindfulness via my brand and website. I’ve been lucky enough to support so many women on their journey, helping them deepen their investment in themselves with mindfulness just as I have.
As I’ve grown and stretched myself, I’ve started to dream of new things. This year, I’m doubling down on my teaching and training background by offering workshops and training’s for companies to help them deepen their investment in their people.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Although I consider myself relentless and come packing immense inner strength, it hasn’t been easy at all. I’ve come up against (and overcome with the help of various coaches) mindset issues; believing I could BE an entrepreneur, feeling comfortable being seen in my gifts, and money blocks.
Additionally, as someone who battles depression and anxiety, I’ve had to figure out (in the trenches) how to manage my resources wisely; my energy, money, and time. What works for me is different from what works for the next guy. There was a time after my 15-year-old cat, Cow, died in 2016 that I lost all three. Prior to his getting sick, my business was gaining tons of momentum; I had a full client roster and was about to hire an editor for my memoir. But when he was diagnosed with lymphoma, everything took a backseat. I drained my savings paying for his procedures. I served my existing clients (most of whom are still with me today) but ceased all biz dev. After care-taking him for 62 days, he passed, and I took a month to hibernate, staying with my parents. In that month I did a lot of reflecting. I learned two lessons more deeply because of that experience. 1. Self-care must NEVER take a backseat, regardless of the stresses going on in my life. 2. My business model wasn’t sustainable. Until I began scaling it, life’s emergencies would continue to wreak havoc on my ability to serve people and sustain my quality of life.
There aren’t one-size fits all model for how to do this. So, balancing a day job while building my business has been a learning process. There were seasons I worked as a contractor to bring in extra money so I could dictate my schedule for my clients and speaking engagements. There was a four-month period where I worked for four different places simultaneously. I was a banquet server at a catering company, an assistant at a wine and painting party shop, and I helped a set up an arena and ran human Foosball games. I also traveled around North America training and supporting hospitality companies with their recently acquired point of sale systems.
Now, all that said to say, I would go back and do it again in a heartbeat. There is nothing more fulfilling that doing what you are meant to do.
If you are considering opening your own business, here’s 3 tips that I learned the hard way:
1. Your businesses success is directly proportional to your willingness to transform. Be prepared to grow a lot and often; personally, professionally, and spiritually.
2. Don’t get caught up in consuming that you avoid creating. Scour the internet for answers to your questions; there is so much free information out there when it comes to hard skills! Be resourceful but not distracted by shiny things.
3. You aren’t meant to do it alone. Work with coaches, mentors, teachers, trainers. Join a mastermind. Take courses and get certifications… strategically. Bring other team members on to do the sh** that exhausts you as soon as you can.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Magical Mindfulness – what should we know?
Essentially, I study how people work, why they do the things they do, and how being seen informs it all.
I am the pioneer of Mindfulness Based Life Coaching. After initially being introduced to mindfulness, I began using it as a tool to invest in myself. It was like magic how quickly it helped me come out of the shadows and move into the spotlight.
I saw how mindfulness had been short changed, being branded as a tool for stress relief. It’s so much more than that. At its core, it’ s about empowerment, and I incorporated that approach into how I work with my clients.
I work with clients in five key areas: relationships and love, spirituality and intuition, career and calling, communication and boundary setting, and all things related to self; self-care, self-love, and self-confidence. These are the five pillars of self-investment.
I’m known for my spot-on insight/intuition and on-point comedic timing. My clients love working with me because I don’t pretend to be this all-knowing guru that sits high on a mountain, can’t connect with you, and is constantly calm and in control. I’m more like the Sherpa. I have wisdom, empathy, guidance, and jokes to offer because I’ve been in the thick of it walking up my own mountain. I know it’s “shocking”, but people like to work with humans more than cardboard. Haha.
I love training and speaking with groups. At its core, my business is as a teacher. I’ve joked that my real home is the stage, haha. In addition to working with clients and groups on the above areas, I also run training’s for companies acting as a wellness change agent. I help leadership further invest in their people, and help the people to invest in themselves which aids in employee experience, engagement, and retention.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
My mom inspires me quite a bit. She didn’t have the best childhood, but she didn’t treat my sister and I the way her mother treated her. I definitely get my love of learning and inner strength from her.
Rhianna and Jenny McCarthy, to utilize that new term, have BDE. They are just so comfortable about who they are; it’s at another level. Who doesn’t wanna feel unapologetically good in their skin and crazy confident? Am I right?!?
My friends Sarah Harmeyer, founder of Neighbors Table and Corie Clark, the creator of “The Purposeful Planner”. I met them through an online group founded by Jon Acuff five years ago. We’ve met in person a handful of times since then. These two women have built brands, businesses, and communities by living out their God-given calling. I want to be like them when I grow up.
And finally, I’m always inspired by those who are creating innovative things and marching to the beat of their own drum. It’s compelling.
