Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Wright.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, you could find me every Saturday painting ceramics at a local art store. I always had my hands in some type of craft or paint box. I was also, a bit of a tomboy! I would watch my older sister do her makeup before cheer practice as I went on to my basketball game. It came as a shock when I decided to run for a pageant in high school. After competing for two years, I won the title of Miss Rhode Island Teen USA 2010. That is where my interest for makeup ignited. I learned how makeup performs on camera, in certain lighting, and small tips for the do’s and dont’s.
Makeup and art are so synonymous in many ways, and with some knowledge in the pageant sphere, I believe it has contributed to much of my success as a makeup artist.
I received a marketing degree from Hofstra University in 2015 where I was doing makeup on the weekends for many of my friends. From there, I turned Glam Done Wright into a business. I studied artists from the west coast that I admired, who now are glamming the faces of celebrities all over the world.
Never did I think this would be a career choice for me, just a passion and the love of helping women feel and look their best.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I used to take everything very personally and in this business or in any business, you simply can’t. You will not please everyone and you have to be ok with that. Move on and brush off any negativity that comes.
I also can be a bit of a pushover at times, not putting time aside for myself or thinking my makeup artistry wasn’t worth a certain price. Set the higher price. Know your worth and the value of your time. Be selfish when it comes to your health and happiness. This is a people pleasing business but it reflects a lot of who you are and how you respect yourself as well.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Glam Done Wright – what should we know?
My clients are always mentioning how their eyes pop or appear larger after they are glammed. I think that is one of my specialties. Eyes are such a captivating asset that just adds warmth and intriguing virtues to someone’s look. I have very hooded eyes, so I always take eyeshadow a little higher and “blown out” beyond the eye, giving it a larger appeal.
I also never try to cake on or overpower someone’s features. Women often tell me they love that they still look like themselves, just a little more extra special. I think this has added too much of my success as an artist. Makeup is a tool to enhance someone’s features, not mask them.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
Instagram has really helped grow my business! It is where I first started posting my makeup and from there grew into a creative environment. Connecting with so many other artists and different people in the industry has been so rewarding. I love that it helps to (freely) market yourself and your talent.
