Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrice Peris.
Patrice, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For me, music has been a part of my life since I was a kid. I was never into sports or many other activities; music consumed my life. I was in multiple musicals a year in high school and went on to study classical at Anna Maria College for a year and a half before transferring out and graduating with a Theater Degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
After college, I found myself looking for ways to immerse myself in the theater scene and started to take classes at a local theater company and lessons with a fabulous instructor there. Not too far into the lessons, I received news that the theater closed and I was left questioning what was next. I had always found myself trying to sing what was on the radio and having a passion for Contemporary so I decided to search for a place where I could hone in on these skills in this area.
I came across a studio in Boston which specialized in contemporary styles of singing and decided to give it a try. After a few years of being an artist with them, they saw that I was excelling in the program and offered me a position teaching artist. Though I was hesitant at first, I did not want to take time away from myself as an artist; it was one of the most significant decisions I made.
Through teaching others, I learned more about myself and found such joy in being able to share with them the knowledge I was obtaining. After years of working with the studio, I became pregnant and decided to take time off to be with my little one. I spent nine great months at home with son but found myself longing to get back into working with artists.
I also wanted to explore the idea of taking all my training and knowledge and creating my own program basing it off the things I felt were the core things a singer needed to have to find their natural voice. So, I started the journey of finding a place, putting together my program and look for the fabulous artist to work with and the rest is history.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any area of life you want to achieve success in there are going to be ups and downs, and I have not been immune to it. I always tell my artist if you’re going to achieve success in any area you must view your journey as a trend chart. You want it to be moving in an upward direction, but when you view that chart from a distance you will see some weeks there are dips down, some weeks there are spikes up, some weeks it may plateau, the important thing is you keep the goal in sight and stay the course. Evaluate what needs to change when you are down and figure out what needs to happen to bring things back up. When things up to celebrate the success and let it fuel you for when things get a little rough!
Please tell us about Patrice Peris Voice Studios.
Patrice Peris Voice Studios is a voice and artist development company working with the artist in the fields of Contemporary and Musical Theater styles of singing. We work to give them all the tools necessary to reach their fullest potential and find their natural voice. We offer seminars and workshops in songwriting, branding, performance and much more. We pride ourselves in creating a space where an artist can gain knowledge in all fields of the music industry and work to give them hands-on experience in the field.
I am most proud of what the artist at the studio has been able to accomplish and the opportunities I have been able to provide for them. For me growing up I had lessons, but it was you go in learn a song and leave. I wanted to create something that would not only give them quality training and full knowledge of the voice and performance but also guide them to understand every aspect of the music industry that will aid them to reach their goals.
Some accomplishments of the studio are, our artists have had their original songs played on radio stations throughout Massachusetts, like Nash 94.7, Mix 104.1, Cat Country, and Country 102.5. My staff and I have successfully set up gigs for the artists at a variety of venues and events throughout New England, such as Faneuil Hall, Wachusett Mountain, Westborough Spring Festival, Bangor State Fair, Spirit of Shrewsbury, Newton Arts Festival, and many more.
I have hosted seminars with top-notch industry professionals such as Former Universal Motown Artist April Forrest, Grammy and BET Nominated Producer Jared Hancock, Casting Agent Jenna Gedman Jenna ( NBC, E! Networks, and Defy Media.), Broadway actress’ Jessica Vosk and Desi Oakley.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Putting on plays for my family. I would create sets and scenes and they have them come and watch. Also, as a child, we would go to Maine on the weekends. We would frequently go to the musicals they put on at Prescott Park each summer and they were a huge inspiration for me.
