Today we’d like to introduce you to Oliver Sanchez.
Mexican entrepreneur Oliver Sanchez partnered with Plug co-working spaces in Brazil, he realized some startups need more than just a desk and wi-fi—especially when they’re looking to enter the US. “Many entrepreneurs from abroad face the same challenges: lack of a network, cultural adaptation, and a different confidence level,” he says. In 2016, he opened Plug Cambridge, an incubator that provides space, mentoring, and visa assistance to foreign-born entrepreneurs in Massachusetts. “I want to prove that non–U.S. entrepreneurs are an asset to the economy, that they’re as good as someone from here,” he says.
Has it been a smooth road?
Right now we live in a tough political climate for foreign-born entrepreneurs. Visas and immigration are still a challenge. Additionally, there is some bias from US investors regarding the quality innovation coming from certain parts of the world.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Plug Cambridge – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
At Plug Cambridge we specialize in hosting early-stage entrepreneurs. We provide them with desks and all the essentials to start working right away. We are unique in our focus on international or immigrant entrepreneurs so we provide specific services such as contact to immigration attorneys and other mentoring specific to entrepreneurs looking to launch in the US. In 2017 we launched our Scale-X accelerator, which is a 3-month program scale-up program aimed at bringing 10 startups from Latin America. We believe in the ingenuity and drive innate in immigrant founders.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Boston is small town feel in a big city body. There is a feeling people know each other around town. Additionally, you have some of the best schools in the world, world-class companies and a bounty of resources available to you. What do I like the least? Well, some parts of Boston can be a bit divided between North, South, East, and West. I know some people that have never visited Cambridge having lived in Boston their whole life!
