Today we’d like to introduce you to Nastahja Cazeau.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nastahja. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started out doing hair for family and friends when I was about 14. I loved it so much when I graduated high school I decided to go to North Carolina and attend Dudley’s Hair School. To be honest being taught the “right way” of doing something after doing it for so many years prior can put a strain on your dreams. After leaving NC I put hair on hold. I got a few regular 9-5 jobs, became a mom and was just trying to find my way. Besides being a mother to my son nothing kept my attention. One day I randomly decided I wanted to go to college. After speaking with some people I got the urge to really enroll. I knew it would be hard to go to school full time, have a full time job and be a parent so one of them had to go! I decided to quit my job and go to school while my son was at Day care. This was the craziest decision but I knew I had to do it in order for my goal to be met. Of course I still had adult bills so I was wondering what I could do to still pay my bills. My aunt brought up doing hair at home. One thing led to another and I went from 0 followers to about 400 in a few months. People were supporting me out of nowhere and ever since 2013 I haven’t turned back. In December 2015 someone said they could see me owning my own salon and in February 2016 I found my current location. It was a very long but even more rewarding road and I would not change anything about it! I now have the best team around me and a whole lot of support from people who know or just heard about me. It feels amazing! I vow to be an example to my community that if you feel like you can; JUST DO IT!
Has it been a smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? NO! Lol. But would I change it? Probably not. I’ve learned so much about myself, those around me, and just about being a business owner overall. No one will ever know until they walk this road themselves. Some of the struggles I faced was gaining respect because I am “so young”. Another struggle was making people take the way I handle my salon seriously. Many people are used to just walking in or calling into a salon to get an appointment. I go by making appointments online. This is because I don’t like the feeling of being rushed or not being able to have that one on one time with my client. Structure is truly important to me.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Natasha’s Hair Bar is a place where honestly all of your hair needs can be met. What do we specialize in? I would say protective styling. Everyone loves our Marley twist and faux locs. I am also known for my “hair crack”. That is what most people call the natural hair oils I make. The oil is great for dry scalp, damaged edges or just hair growth overall. I would say our salon structure sets us apart from other salons. Everyone loves not having to wait, being told in advance if a stylist is running late, or even just being able to speak to their stylist without having a crowd around to listen.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our city is a great place to start any business to be honest. Genuine support is what we lack. If more business owners in the same field collaborated instead of finding a reason to compete Boston would be more flourishing in every field. So many people are scared to start because they don’t think people will support. I still say go for it and the support will come as long as you take yourself serious. People will eventually follow suit, even if you don’t know them embrace it.
