Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Rozanski Brundage.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Meghan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I loved fitness since before I can remember! My dad used to take my sisters and I to the gym with him. He would work out while we’d swim in the pool then we’d all go upstairs to the restaurant and eat curly fries. It was awesome.
I danced from the time I was 2, started running in middle school and attended my first yoga class in a basement of a church at some point in my late teens. I took aerobics, kickboxing, indoor cycling… I was really up for anything that made me sweat so heated power yoga felt like a natural progression.
I would have told you I was healthy at the time, but honestly, I just wanted to be skinny. I tried a new diet every few weeks and I smoked a ton of cigarettes. My voice was so raspy in college that the lady at the Dunks drive through called me “Sir.”
I worked in marketing and events for a while, planning huge conferences for the Omega Institute in New York which is where I really fell in love with yoga. Eventually, I moved back to Boston, took a job at a tech PR agency and completed a 200 hour yoga teacher training. Somewhere in there, my love affair with Parliament Lights came to a halt, thank God. Maybe it was the annual bronchitis but I want to say yoga had something to do with it.
My love for intense cardio led me to get certified in spin. I find teaching yoga and spin is a great balance for me. I need that heart pumping, loud sweaty energy of a spin class as much as I crave the strength and stretch of yoga and the calm and presence of meditation.
I took the leap to start teaching full time about eight years ago which was scary but I knew if I busted my ass, I could make a decent living. I’m currently certified in Prenatal Yoga, Balanced Athlete, Yin Yoga and Meditation. I teach yoga at YogaWorks in the Back Bay and Asana in Charlestown and I teach spin at The Handle Bar.
In the past 2 years, I gave birth to my son, Casey, completed my 300 hour training with the amazing Jacqui Bonwell and I became an ambassador for lululemon at the Prudential.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Becoming a full time yoga and fitness professional is awesome because I genuinely love what I do but man, this job is a hustle. When pay depends on how many students attend classes, holidays, college breaks and Boston weather make it difficult to prepare for the future.
Sick, in mourning, injured, pregnant… If I don’t work, I don’t get paid. When I was single and younger, teaching 20 classes a week and driving all over the state was tiring but somewhat manageable. Now that I’m a mom, it is NOT. Having Casey has taught me to become way more resourceful with my time and energy. What’s best for my family will always come first.
Please tell us about MeghanFitness.com.
I’m probably most known for my huge summer outdoor events when I partner up with Harpoon Brewery and DJ Sprino. I love beer but these events aren’t about getting hammered. These giant groups, sometimes up to 500 people, come together to practice yoga in the fresh air and the best part is that we get to hang out after.
I also offer “Voyage to Savasana” where I take about 15 people out on a private boat to Spectacle Island, teach an hour long yoga class, a 10 minute meditation, then cruise around while eating snacks and drinking champagne and/or juices. I see these events as a way to build more love and community in the city and I get to witness it first hand. It’s a beautiful thing.
In the fall, winter & spring, I offer two workshops. The first is “Align Your Soul” which focuses on the chakras – how to reconcile energetic imbalances in your body and mind through movement and sound. The second is “Movement, Meditation & Mindful Eating” and we focus on how to live your best life through yoga asana, meditation and a plant-based lifestyle.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nope 🙂
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think I’ve been successful because I’m authentic and I’m passionate about helping people change their lives. I’m reluctant to say that because it sounds like generic “yoga-speak” but I do what I do because I’ve experienced what fitness, yoga, mindful eating and meditation can do for your mind and body and I want everyone to feel that at some point in their lives.
