Meet Megan Theodore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Theodore.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up, I spent my time filling notebooks with novel length stories and gluing collages together whenever my nose wasn’t in a book. My mom was constantly squinting behind her viewfinder, telling my brother and I to ‘say cheese’ and filling our walls with photo albums. Creativity was all around me. Ever since we learned how to write, my parents required us to journal while school was out for the summer to keep our wits about us and I never really seemed to put mine down. Now at 23 years old, I am a published poet and writer currently existing in Massachusetts. My heart is constantly bursting with creative energy while my limbs feel as though they’re being tugged in all different directions; divided between my love of poetry and writing, music, photography, fashion, and videography.

Please tell us about your art.
With creative passion coursing through my veins, it’s always been challenging for me to stick to one medium at a time. I’ve dabbled in songwriting and spent a small amount of time in the studio, published a collection of poetry, and had my photographs hung and displayed in a variety of places throughout my college career. Dipping my toe in the water of every passion that I felt drawn toward has always been my way of releasing that creative energy. After taking the opportunity to live in London for six months and travel around Europe, I was able to connect with so many people and became so overwhelmingly inspired by the different cultures around me. Luckily, something incredible was born from being split between different forms of art through all of the inspiration around me: the idea to virtually build a creative home and platform for women to express themselves in any way they’d like.

The home is a website called Allumage, which we soon hope to bring to print as well. It is a collaborative website for female creatives, providing a spotlight for mediums all across the board. From written pieces to photo series to podcasts to style features, it offers insight, knowledge, and creative expression from many different perspectives. All of the bursting creative energy beating at my chest trying to escape throughout my life finally found its way out and I’m thrilled that I get to share this with such a wide variety of fellow creatives alongside me.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
As an artist, it’s all too easy to get lost in the emotion of the creative process. Just as Noor Unnahar writes, “like the sorrow of a writer creates poetry, everything that is beautiful doesn’t always start beautifully.” This was a significant factor behind the idea to start Allumage. I’m always so adamant on shining the spotlight on other artists. As a fellow creator looking at a beautiful piece of art, sure, you’re wishing that you had been the one to create it, but every artist is different, and there’s enough room for anyone willing to speak their truth. Building a community that promotes collaboration over competition, where women are cheering each other on and working together to bring a little light to the world is the intention behind Allumage. In a community that can often feel isolating and full of rejection, we’re standing together with open arms and building each other up.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My song ‘String’ is available on iTunes and Spotify, while my collection of poetry called ‘love…or lack thereof’ is available at amazon.com, lulu.com, and barnesandnoble.com.
