Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Wilton.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working in the TV business out in Los Angeles after going to film school at Emerson College. I started making the shift to photography in 2012 after moving back to the east coast and never looked back. Today the business is growing and Wilton Brothers Photography is making a name for itself in New England. 2017 was a record year with over 30 weddings and next year is on track to do the same or more.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There weren’t too many struggles along the way. There’s obviously things you get wrong and learn but as a whole the business has steadily grown.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Wilton Brothers Photography – what should we know?
As a business I focus on wedding photography. It didn’t start off that way, however. I do other work including family photos, portraits, real estate photography and commercial work but over time weddings took over as the primary focus.
A lot of my style comes from my background in the entertainment business. I studied cinematography so lighting, cameras etc have always been a focus. Technically I’m pretty savvy and creatively I have a lot of different experience that I bring to my photos. I keep things pretty bright and try to come up with new shots at every wedding.
I’m becoming known for my night shots and make sure to take a couple out at sunset or later for some fun.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I started the business with my brother so credit is certainly owed to him for getting the ball rolling. You have to start somewhere and our first few weddings were thanks to him and his friends who were getting married at the time. He has since moved on to another career opportunity.
I can’t not mention my wife also! She has been a huge support with everything and almost always comes and helps me out on engagement sessions.
