Meet Mary Maloney of Bee’s Knees Design in Hopkinton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Maloney.

Mary, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out as political science major way back when and had a great job as a Senate Aide. I was working for Paul Cellucci at the time, one couldn’t ask for a better job or boss! Paul was amazing, terrific to work with, I learned so much from him. I was also enrolled to attend law school at night but my heart wasn’t in it, creative pursuits beckoned.

My passion for design flourished after purchasing our first home. Like many homeowners we began with champagne taste on a limited budget. Creativity was essential to accomplishing our never ending list of improvements and updates. Thankfully from an early age my parents encouraged creativity. They were constantly hunting for “treasures” in unexpected places and hauling them home to reinvent and repurpose, to great effect. Our childhood home was not fancy but it was warm and welcoming.

My first generation upbringing also entrenched a hard work ethic, admittedly I did not appreciate it at the time but I do now. I am very grateful for the support from family, to this day they are our biggest cheerleaders!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes, always, small business owners face endless challenges. The learning curve is constant, you master one challenge as the next one presents itself. New technologies, new processes, new systems, new opportunities, all so exciting and at times overwhelming. The biggest frustration is the many hours that are devoted to troubleshooting situations that we have no control over. If something arrives in less than perfect shape it is up to us to fix it and sometimes at our expense. We work our Fannies off for our clients and the reward is very much worth it; very happy clients who refer their family and friends!

Bee’s Knees Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our charming Main Street studio houses a great collection of resources for our clients, all of which helps to streamline the sourcing process. We pride ourselves on offering a very high level of service. We love to blend old with new, our approach is not cookie cutter. A layered look takes time but the end results justify the means. We enjoy collaborative efforts with other like-minded creatives. We are a very friendly crew and good listeners. We design to our client’s individual needs and the Golden Rule applies to everyone we come in contact with.

Our projects range in size and scope, from one room makeovers to full house renovations. We are passionate design geeks, we live and breathe for good design. There is tremendous satisfaction and reward when you see the impact of a job well done. At the end of the day we all need a place to retreat to and refuel. The best reward is the look on a client’s face when we deliver what we promised and then some!
