Meet Mariella Bisson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariella Bisson.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I start my work with drawing and painting outdoors on site. I hike into the forests to find my locations. I use the field works as a basis for more experimental approaches to painting in mixed media on linen. I love to take a small composition and then expand it to a large-scale painting. I hope to bring the cool breezes and the slow geological time into people’s lives. I am a hunter of shapes, a fisherman of colors, and a tracker of landscape memory.

Please tell us about your art.
Because I was born and raised in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, I have an affinity for forests, streams, waterfalls and boulders. My late Father, John Bisson was a painter and carver. When I was born, my parents were renting their home from Robert Frost. I went to a one-room schoolhouse in East Burke, VT and many years later found my way to art school in New York City. My work requires skill, drawing, and observation of nature. My imagery is based in nature and my themes deal with time, change over time, and the rhythms of shapes in the landscape. I hope that people feel the balance of peacefulness and energy in the paintings. I hope my paintings reinforce the bonds we have with the natural world.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I think there is all too much attention being paid to the business of being an artist. More attention needs to be paid to making great work. So, my advice to emerging artists is to concentrate on the work, use the best materials you can find and afford. Take pride in your accomplishments and in your evolving skills.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
In Boston, I show with Erdreich White Fine Arts and with Boston Art. Additionally in Brunswick, Maine with Bayview Gallery and in Southern Vermont with Gallery North Star in Grafton. Nationally I am with Momentum Gallery in Asheville, NC where I’m having a significant show from August to November – on view now.
