Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Frazier.
Liz, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My business started kind of by accident seven years ago. At the time I was working as a freelance designer. I was looking for a hobby to take me away from the computer screen and, as a candle lover, decided to take on candle making. I sort of fell in love with it and experimented with various fragrances and containers. I started to give candles to family and friends because I just had too many. Some got in front of a local shop owner, who asked to carry them in their store. The next thing I knew, I had a candle business.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think everyone has some struggles along the way. As my business began to grow I definitely felt a tug of war with work/life balance. When you work for yourself it’s very easy to get lost in work and all the facets of running a business. You don’t mind putting that much time and effort in when you’re working for yourself. But you do have to pull away and enjoy some down time and time with your family.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Witch City Wicks is an independent, artisan candle company based out of Salem, Massachusetts. All candles are made with vegan-friendly soy wax, poured, labeled and packaged by hand with care and attention. Scents and packaging are heavily inspired by alt-subcultures, movies, music, history and life in Salem. And a general love for candles.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like having my business based in Salem has been paramount to our success. Our brand is heavily influenced by living here day to day. The community has also been incredibly supportive of our business since we began. Last year we opened our brick and mortar shop in downtown Salem and the response has been humbling. Many of our customers are so happy to be able to come to our location and smell all the products we offer. I think many people, in general, love to see small businesses open and thrive in their city.
