Meet Lindsay Hite of Lindsay Hite Photography/BostonGIF

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Hite.

Lindsay, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story started fourteen years ago when I walked into the darkroom at Weston High School and fell in love with the mystery and beauty of photography. I was lucky enough to have a supportive mentor, and encouraging parents and I followed my passion to Maryland Institute College of Art to pursue my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Photography.

When I studied abroad at Parsons Paris, my love of storytelling and fashion grew through freelance assignments for a magazine, wandering the city and photographing Fashion Week. My love for connecting with people, and telling their stories became the center of my inspiration. I returned to the states to finish up my degree, and I was introduced to the contemporary world of wedding photography in 2007.

Weddings became the perfect fusion of telling people’s stories and beauty to make something my clients truly treasured. I am thankful to have had talented mentors, and collaborators throughout my career and would not be where I am today without my community of fellow entrepreneurs and creative professionals.

I feel fortunate to have had my work published in major magazines including being named one of Rangefinder’s 30 Rising Stars in Wedding Photography, and Improper Bostonian’s Best of Boston. While these accolades helped to boost my confidence, the true satisfaction comes from creating meaningful work for my clients, no matter who else sees it. My career has evolved over the years and I have continually fine-tuned my focus to better serve my clients.

I am passionate about creating a photographic experience that is genuine and custom tailored for my clients and allows them to truly celebrate the love, the people, and the moments they are most grateful for in their life. Giving my clients permission to see beauty in their every day, and experience gratitude for their lives through photographs continues to be my “why” and my reason being in business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The life of a creative entrepreneur is never a straight line from point A to point B. There are twists and turns based on the market, client base, and the evolution of one’s interests and passions. My biggest two challenges I consider gifts that allowed me to focus and push my vision to stand out from the crowd. The first was launching my career in 2008 when I graduated college right at the beginning of the recession.

I see this as a gift because I had nothing to lose! I was able to pursue my passion without the pressures of paying a mortgage and supporting a family. I was able to take risks, and develop my reputation and client base, and learned so much along the way. The second challenge was a decision that I fully accepted and welcomed, but it didn’t come without doubts and concerns. I had my business based in Baltimore, Maryland for the first six years of my career and a few years ago my husband and I decided that we wanted to move back to New England for many reasons.

We love Boston and the community here, but it was a risk to move my business that is built on word of mouth and reputation to an entirely new market. I am thankful that I felt welcomed with open arms immediately, and almost three years later I can say without a doubt it was the right decision for us.

It has been important for me to dig deep at various points over the years if I started to feel like my work was getting stale, or my focus needed redirection. For me, it always comes back to my “why” and getting to know my clients and how I may best serve them by creating something of true value and meaning for them, as opposed to chasing the temporary style trends at any given moment.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lindsay Hite Photography/BostonGIF story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in photographic experiences that enable people to celebrate their favorite aspects of their life, and the people that they love. I am proud to create tangible heirlooms for my clients to treasure tomorrow and in twenty years. My photographs serve as a cornerstone for people’s lives, and I don’t take this lightly. I learn about my clients and their stories so I can represent them and their lives authentically.

When life gets hectic and crazy, my clients look at the photographs we have created, and they can start the day and end the day with comfort in their hearts, reminded of their own strength and beauty, and of the love and support of amazing people in their life.

A year ago I also started offering a Photo Booth service called Boston GIF. I saw a need for a fast paced, next generation photo booth at weddings and corporate events with the ease of instant social media sharing. The photo booth creates an animated GIF that captures the energy and enthusiasm of the event, and people find it so amusing! Now, it’s developed into a powerful marketing tool for brands who want to share their message on social media with our logo and branded messaging option as well.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
This is a really great question! I believe that luck favors those who are prepared to take full advantage of the situation, and when you have an open mind, you can see opportunity or luck where others may not see it.

Photography itself is a combination of luck and preparation – being in the right place at the right time, with the right camera settings and best equipment to capture the moment as it unfolds. But it also requires the creative eye to make the best of a situation, and in this sense, I believe that you create your own luck.
