Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Mackler.
Lauren, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In my early twenties, I was a professional singer with the recording group, “Tuxedo Junction” and living in Los Angeles. After attending a life-changing personal growth workshop, I decided to leave show business and became a mind-body psychotherapist.
After living and working in Europe for several years, I returned to the U.S., got a master’s degree in Organizational Development, and expanded my work into the corporate arena. Prior to founding my own firm in 2001, I worked with people in career transition at Right Management, served as Vice President of Learning and Organizational Development at Boston Financial, and led Arthur Andersen’s People Strategy consulting practice for the Northeast region.
In 2001—three days after 911—I decided to resign from Arthur Andersen and start my own business. While I enjoyed helping people become better leaders and build people-centric companies, I missed the deeper transformative work I had done as a therapist. I decided to create a company in which I could combine all of the different parts of my work as a personal and professional coach, consultant, speaker, workshop facilitator, and writer. In 2006, I was honored to be invited to contribute a chapter for a book about success with fellow authors Stephen Covey and Jack Canfield, and in 2009 my first solo book, “Solemate: Master the Art of Aloneness & Transform Your Life” was published, becoming an international bestseller nine days after its release.
I’ve had my business for 16 years now and I am still energized by the work. Helping people to live more authentically, joyfully, purposefully, and humanely is my life’s mission. I feel very lucky to have recognized and engage in the work I was born to do.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have certainly been challenges, especially early on. One mistake I made was not having a mentor or coach. In retrospect, having an experienced guide would have been enormously helpful in the beginning. Instead, I figured things out on my own, wasting both time and resources in the process.
Another challenge was to create a brand that made sense to the diverse clientele with whom I work. A weekend can find me facilitating a transformative workshop at Kripalu or Omega. During the week, I might be consulting to a corporation or family business, in addition to my personal and professional coaching work. It took a few years for me to realize that the thread running through all of my work was to help clients to “live boldly”—to liberate their potential and achieve the vision to which they aspire. Once I figured out my overall contribution, the branding became a lot easier.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lauren Mackler & Associates – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As I mentioned, I work in a variety of contexts in my business, and my clients include individuals, couples, groups, corporations, and family businesses.
One of the things I’m known for and passionate about is called “Illumineering”, which is a unique integration of psychology and coaching that I developed. After recognizing the limitations of using psychology or coaching as a sole approach, I combined the two to help clients achieve more transformative and lasting results. Illumineering has helped people around the world to improve their personal lives, relationships, careers, and companies. I work in person with folks in the Boston area and via Skype with people living in other parts of the world.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I’m proud of Boston’s history and diversity, and its abundance of artistic, cultural, culinary, and educational resources. What I dislike is the traffic! Fortunately, being self-employed gives me the opportunity to avoid rush-hour congestion most of the time.
