Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Bosselait.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve been creating things my entire life. From scrapbooking to knitting to clay sculpture, I’ve tried it all. I took up photography in college after starting my personal fashion blog. I quickly realized that my favorite part of the process was taking the photos rather than writing the posts.
After college, I went to work for a home decor company doing copywriting, blogging, photography, and videography. My passion for visual media blossomed in that position. I had a lot of freedom to explore my style and create the types of videos I loved to watch.
A year into that position I started Kelsey Haley Media as something to do on the weekends. Little did I know, that side project would take over my life. I spent every night after work organizing shoots, editing photos, and updating my website.
In August of 2017, I decided to take the leap and do Kelsey Haley Media full time.
Now, I specialize in portrait, fashion, and wedding photography and I create videos for small businesses and creative entrepreneurs.
Please tell us about your art.
I love to create a feeling in a photo. My goal is to not just capture a static image but to tell a story in one frame. My favorite photos are the ones that have movement and emotion.
I try to keep my style very natural. I want it to feel like the moment could have happened organically and I just happened to be there to catch it.
In the video side of my business, I get to show off other people’s work. I mainly shoot fashion lookbooks, tutorials, and brand videos. For lookbooks, I work to create a dreamy atmosphere that showcases both the beauty and details of the pieces and the life that could be lived in them.
For tutorial and brand videos, I work on showing the person’s expertise and telling their story. I love to peek behind the scenes and see how things are made, so getting to share these artist’s creative processes is always exciting.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I define success as being proud of the work you’re creating. If you don’t love your work, no amount of money or notoriety will be worth it.
The quality that I feel is essential to being successful as an artist is perseverance. You have to keep trying new things and keep pushing yourself forward. Especially when your art becomes your job, it can be difficult to stay motivated every day.
When you hit a block you have to find a way around it, whether that’s pushing through or taking a break to work on a different creative outlet. When I’m feeling stuck, I’ll paint or draw or embroider to get my creative juices flowing in other areas.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can support me by sharing my work with others. Tell your friend who owns their own business, your sister that’s getting married, your cousin that needs senior portraits!
