Meet Kelly Maher of K-Energy Fitness in Hyde Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Maher.

Kelly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been a dancer and loved performing. It was never something I really pursued as a profession, since fear and self-confidence will do that to you, but I did continue to dance in college, my 20s and made a brief appearance as a professional lacrosse dancer! My dream was to dance in the parades at Disney or be Cinderella but when that didn’t happen I figured it just wasn’t in the cards for me. I bounced around between jobs before finding the closest thing to my dream job at Radio Disney. I worked events and was able to perform for kids and families and give them a “magical” experience. I think this is where my love for giving people an experience started. I started teaching Zumba in 2011 as a way to get a free gym membership and some extra money but it quickly became apparent that THIS was the way I could continue to entertain people while also helping change their lives for the better!

I had left Disney, thinking I had outgrown the job, and (amongst other job hops) started working at a gym in Cambridge this opened my eyes a little more to fitness and making it my lifestyle. Talking to people about their health and fitness goals, helping them get started and teaching more felt like a new great fit for me! I was given the opportunity to go back to Radio Disney with a promotion THEN shortly after let go due to the station closing all while I was on maternity leave! As devasting as it was, it was the fire I needed to make fitness and teaching my main job, while giving me the flexibility to stay home with my son!

Within the last 2 years I have been teaching more at the local YMCA’s and offering my own drop in classes as well as started my own company as a fitness coach. I love living a healthy lifestyle and helping people fall in love with it as well. My goal is to have people leave my classes with a full heart and full of sweat! I want people to leave on a high and have a fun experience where they feel like part of the community….. Like part of the fitfam! Teaching made me want to offer more to my students so I became an online fitness coach where I provide workouts, nutrition plans and daily accountability to help people reach their goals!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have had so many jobs trying to figure out what was the right fit. What did I like? What could I really see myself doing for the rest of my life? What was I passionate about? As I’m starting to pave my own road in fitness, it’s still a bumpy uphill battle but it’s one I’m focused on because I know that it’s what I’m meant to do!

Please tell us about K-Energy Fitness.
K-Energy Fitness offers fun, upbeat and high energy dance fitness and HIIT style classes. I specialize in pushing you past your limits and challenging you to “just try” while I also take no BS or excuses! You can hear me yelling Suck it up buttercup or you’re welcome during class because lazy is not an option! I create a family atmosphere where everyone belongs and you’re never to young, old, uncoordinated, etc.! When you attend my classes you become part of the fitfam. I take pride in how much I involve my 2 boys (Callan 4, Colton 2) with my workouts and can never get enough of people asking “how do you do it all”? It’s important to me so I make it work with them. They are my REASON not my EXCUSE! I’m most proud of the impact I can have on someone’s life from 45mins of dancing or working out and that I can get people to let their guard down and just laugh. There’s enough to take serious in life and your workout doesn’t have to be one of them!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wish I knew then what I know now! I wish I had the confidence in myself at 18 as I do at 35 and I wish I knew how much fitness would be a part of my life some day! I would’ve went to school for exercise science instead of marketing…….. Which at the time I thought meant there was a world of job opportunities waiting! Not realizing everyone had the same thoughts!
