Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Rofé .
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Long Island, New York and then moved to Boston to attend Northeastern University. I became interested in film after I met some art students and started following a couple of Instagram pages. I’m studying health science and child psychology and film photography is just a fun hobby of mine. I was born deaf (I wear bilateral cochlear implants) and I identify as gay so my main interest is photographing queer people and those with mental or physical handicaps. I also love candid street photography.
Please tell us about your art.
I absolutely love film photography because you don’t really know what a photograph is going to look like until it’s developed. I’m definitely still an amateur at photography so my pictures can be quite unpredictable. My main focus are queer people and those with mental and/or physical conditions. I’m deaf and queer and I think it’s crucial for people like us to have more representation in the art world. It can always be improved. I photographed a ton of people at Boston Pride and it was one of the best shoots I’ve done. I want people to see this little community I’ve created and see people who are just like them and see them as beautiful.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
We live under an administration right now that is not very polite to the queer community nor to the disabled. I can still picture that time when Trump mocked a reporter with a disability. I hope my photographs, in some way, tell people “we are here and we are resisting.”
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
