Meet Judy Malcolm of Perfect Fit Pilates and Stretch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Judy Malcolm.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Several years ago, I was in a high-speed car accident which left me with soft tissue injuries to my back. Going to the chiropractor 3 times a week was helping but I decided to try yoga to see if the stretching would also help with the tightness and pain I was feeling. I found that when I did gentle yoga once a week I was pain-free and had no visits to the chiropractor. If I didn’t do yoga, I was back at the chiropractor. So, I was hooked!

In the late 2000’s, my mother was in hospice and my corporate job was no longer satisfying. I left IT and took some time off to hang out with my mother and get fit. I became a Yoga, Group Fitness and Spin instructor and then discovered Pilates! I love Pilates, both Mat Pilates and apparatus based – and the concentration required to properly execute the exercises. I bought the studio I worked for and moved to a larger facility in 2015.

Along the way, I discovered the Stretch to Win Institute for Fascial Stretch Therapy™. I am currently the highest certified Fascial Stretch Therapist in Massachusetts. I love this modality because of the clientele that it draws. I’ve gotten to work with a World Record Holder, a budding Olympian, NCAA Hockey Players, as well as some of the New England Patriots.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some of my struggles – I developed Lyme disease a few years ago and I couldn’t work. I not only couldn’t work, I could barely make it down the stairs at home. My clients were very understanding, I had another Pilates instructor that could cover that part of the business, but I couldn’t see my Stretch clients.

Plus, I was burned out from my IT years and I felt like a failure at life in general. That took years to overcome, I meditate, say my affirmations every day, and get regular energy healings – like Reiki or Full Spectrum Healing.

And lately I find that I feel fresh and ready to conquer the day after I affirm that I will partner with everyone I meet today – we will partner to help and lift each other. I then bring that energy to all my interactions – with friends, business associates, clients, supermarket cashiers, everyone.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Perfect Fit Pilates and Stretch – what should we know?
Well, I start out as a Yoga and Fitness Instructor, I never imagined that this would be where I’d be at now. Buying the Pilates studio, and then branching out into Fascial Stretch Therapy™ and Energy work. Now we have additional Pilates Instructors as well as Barre and Yoga Instructors and another Energy Healer, We feel well equipped to help our clients our clients to start moving better and with less pain.

We offer a completely non-judgmental environment and encourage our clients to come as they are. Once in the door, we encourage positive self-talk and stress reduction through mind/body connection – either working out, or assisted stretching, or self-myofascial release or stretching or a combination.

Our instructors are encouraged to draw from the best and the brightest movement resources they can find. We let these other resources influence our Pilates instruction so we can help the client in front of us.

What sets us apart from others is also what I am proudest of – We don’t feel constrained by our training, we use our training as a springboard to solve our client’s problems. We observe and correct movement form when appropriate, but work to keep the corrections positive so everyone sees how they succeeding.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’ve had several excellent coaches, both formally and informally, along the way. I want to start by apologizing to those who I omit but couldn’t have done it without you.

-Jes Poplawski – She actually sat me down and told me why I should buy the Pilates studio I worked for. She was right, and I am so very very happy that I did that.

-Marilyn Taylor, who helped me through my personal transition from employee to solo-preneaur. Although I wanted to become an entrepreneur, my ’employee’ brain was fighting me like mad and Marilyn helped me to see through that and to start to step into my own power.

-My Arizona clients who encouraged me to do things other than Pilates.

-My current life/business accountability coach – Chris Hogan. He helps me stay on course.

-My sister Heather Resitfo – who has encouraged me all along the way.

-My husband – Eugenio – for putting up with the crap that comes from living with a solo-preneaur.
