Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Dillon.
Jim, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For whatever reason I’ve always been drawn to, and have been fascinated with, various forms of creation. I think my first creative memory was participating in a writing contest in the fourth grade that I wound up winning. Around the same time, my grandfather helped foster my creativity by giving me a dollar for any invention that I came up with and pitched to him. I wish I could remember what they all were, but I’m sure they were mostly pretty terrible. I think one of them was a fork, spoon and knife in one utensil, but unbeknownst to me, apparently the ‘spork’ already existed. *laughs*
Around the age of fourteen I fell in love with rock music and the guitar. From the first time I had a guitar in my hands, I could feel all of the endless possibilities at my fingertips. My parents recognizing my new found passion, helped my first guitar become a reality. By the time the ink dried on my driver’s license, I found myself in a band playing music all over New England. At the same time, I was really getting into computers and (modem-based) networking (mid 90’s). I went to college studying Computer Science, with a split focus on 3D animation and programming. I accepted a great opportunity working for a local dot com startup in the Boston area, and was constantly balancing my tech-based career and moonlighting as a musician (I remember having to use all of my accrued vacation for the year at one time so that I could tour with my band in Europe).
After realizing how tough it is to develop a decent career as a musician, I started to narrow my career focus to the tech industry and reluctantly stowed away my creativity into the ‘hobby’ category.
A good friend of mine, whom I had met at the dot com startup, had come up with a great idea for an indie film that I just had to be part of. I wound up playing the role of composer, actor, sound designer and even fight coordinator. The film wound up being accepted for a film festival and that was a good reminder of what great creative energy can feel like. If only I could direct this energy into my career. As fate would have it, the tech job that I was working at opened a video production department, and I jumped at the opportunity to apply. From there, I became absolutely obsessed with learning everything I could about the video production process, and not long after, I wound up managing a studio-based video production team.
Looking to diversify, I started Caxn Media in 2014, and have been building the brand ever since. Since then we’ve created high quality video productions from everything from large road races in Boston, music videos, exercise videos, corporate events, Kickstarters, software training videos, and craft breweries. We love helping businesses (especially small businesses) show the world exactly what they are all about!
Has it been a smooth road?
Like anything worthwhile, there are always obstacles, challenges, and bumps in the road. One of the biggest challenges we had when getting started would have to be equipment acquisition. Video Production can be looked at as either a high cost investment, or a very, VERY expensive hobby depending on how seriously you take it. *Laughs* Because of that, we are very careful with large investments, are very diligent with our equipment research, are always up to date with the latest tech and are always looking at tools and techniques that help us stand out as a brand.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Caxn Media is a video production company based in the Boston area that specializes in providing high production value, at a low cost. Put simply, we create high-budget video production quality for a fraction of the cost of a large production house.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The Boston area is absolutely a great place for a business like ours. Boston is the ultimate hub for education, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. There are just so many growing businesses here (from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies) from all facets of industry and they all have one thing in common – They all need to promote their products and services so that they can stand out. That’s where we come in!
