Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Falvey.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My story has a unique start; I grew up with love for hair, makeup, fashion, and all things girly and beautiful. My aunt loves to tell the story about 3-year-old Jen, putting on a full face of makeup and coming out to model to the family.
Fast forward 15 years to high school. I was always offering to color, highlight, and braid my friend’s hair, but being a great academic student-athlete, it never occurred to me that I could take this passion of beauty and turn it into a real career. I had always wanted to go to law school, so that was the path I chose, attending UMASS Amherst with a degree in legal studies.
After four years of college, a paralegal job, and getting accepted into law school, the time had come to “pursue my dream.” Accept something was holding me back, I knew I would never be passionate about practicing law, I may be successful but would I be truly satisfied?
The answer was no; I did some soul searching and came back to my love for fashion and beauty. I was hesitant to tell my family about my decision, but they were very supportive. The next fall I was enrolled at Paul Mitchell the School RI, Let me tell you, this year in cosmetology school was more challenging than four years in college.
I worked in a Bridal Salon in Newport while in school, which really solidified my love for the salon industry. After graduation, I was an apprentice at a Salon in Franklin, MA. This was a challenging but extremely rewarding time for me in my career. I learned that real success is completely possible in the salon, but you have to work very hard for it.
My life changed when I met my husband, we moved to Worcester, I applied to Salon Exquisite, and four years later I am happier than ever. I am the assistant manager, bridal coordinator, and probably the biggest fan of Salon Exquisite.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not, I was very nervous to change career paths from law to cosmetology. There have been many obstacles, but each and every one has made me the person and stylist I am today.
Starting over in a new city away from most of my family and friends proved to be challenging, but getting involved in the local community, amazing organizations such as Business Networking International, the Young Professional Women’s Association in Worcester, and the chamber of commerce, I have had a blast building my amazing clientele.
Please tell us about Salon Exquisite.
I specialize in hair color and extensions. I am extremely passionate about customizing my clients color and recommending a change to enhance their natural beauty.
This past year I graduated from the first ever Goldwell Master Stylist Class in North America, which was by far my greatest accomplishment thus far as a stylist. The program took me a year to complete, traveling to the Goldwell Academy in NYC to learn from the most talented educators in the world. It was incredibly inspiring and humbling.
I think my college degree/ experience, eagerness to learn, love for education, and my overall love for my clients and hair are what set me apart from others in the industry. I strive to be a very well rounded person, with an incredible desire to succeed.
I am also the bridal coordinator for Salon Exquisite, and I love working with brides to ensure their big day is all they have dreamed of and more. I adore my brides and love seeing the finished product months later. Another passion I have pursued is doing hair, and makeup for photo shoots with local photographers.
Seeing my work professionally photographed is so gratifying. I love helping other artists enhance their work, to me, enhancing a woman’s natural beauty and helping them gain the confidence to see themselves as the rest of the world does is addicting, I LOVE IT!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think most people expect me to say I would have started doing hair and makeup immediately after high school, but I would not change a thing.
I feel like everything I have done thus far has given me the work ethic and life skills I needed to succeed.
