Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgia Cook.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Drawing on the white walls of my bedroom with crayon as a little girl was only the beginning (who knew they would later come out with mess free crayons). Even though I was in trouble, I wanted something more than a piece of paper.
Flash forward fifteen years later to 2012 when I graduated with a B.F.A in Graphic Design. I currently have two different paths that I am pursuing and I love how different they both are.
I launched Georgiarcook Design & Photography during senior year of college. Being self-taught, I started by volunteering for the Pan Mass Challenge Kids ride in my town as one of the photographers every year among other smaller events until I received my first client. The request was to photograph a local bar mitzvah in our town. After this first event, something clicked in my brain where I could create a part-time business out of something I loved. From that first event I have been able to broaden my horizons with family photos, engagements, reunions, weddings and more.
On the other hand, I started hand painting custom cornhole boards as a wedding gift for one of my friends two years ago. It never occurred to me that this would be something that people would want – they make for a great wedding gift! Since then the interest has sparked people’s attention and I’ve created some really amazing designs. I’m so proud of every set that I create and hope that people enjoy them as much as I enjoy creating them.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Juggling a full time job with both photography sessions and painting cornhole boards is not exactly easy (granted the boards have been taking up most of my time lately). The cornhole boards are definitely the most time consuming, depending on the design. I wouldn’t say it’s a struggle either though – I enjoy the hands-on part of it too much. I’m lucky enough to have family and friends support me along the way on both sides.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Georgiarcook Photography & Design story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in natural light photography and custom painted cornhole boards. On the photography side I’m more focused around portraiture work (engagement shoots, family portraits, weddings, and senior sessions). The custom cornhole boards are one of a kind hand painted works of art – it gives me a chance to work with different people and create something fun that will be with them for years.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m lucky enough to have friends and family who support both sides of my businesses and have spread the word for me. Most of my clients have come through word of mouth. Although neither are full time for me I am still so glad that I am able to fulfill my art and creativity through photography and painting.
