Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Melville.
Gary’s great uncle had owned five successful candy stores in the Greater Boston area back in the 1920’s. They were called Flynn’s Fudge Shop the most popular shop was on State Street in Boston. In 1978, he was working as an Iron worker and ended up getting laid off. His mother suggested he pick up where his uncle had left off making candy she gave Gary the family recipe books and hand crafted molds that his great uncle had passed down to his mother.
In his family’s home in Quincy Massachusetts, he began making lollipops and Melville Candy Company was born. As lollipops sold he continued to reinvest and create new products to sell to local Candy Stores, Gift Shops, Bakery’s and Restaurants. As time went on and business continued to grow, he began to teach his only child, Joe Melville all about the candy business. After Joe graduated from Suffolk University he became half owner of Melville Candy. Working together Gary and Joe Melville built the business to where it is today. Starting as a one man operation to employing over 200 full and part time employees. Melville Candy now produces 5.5 million handmade lollipops per year.
Has it been a smooth road?
In the beginning, the lollipops were selling so fast that it was difficult to keep up with the raw goods needed for production. Having to work 3 jobs to pay the bills, Gary was very appreciative of all the help and encouragement he received from others in the candy industry as well as from family members. Gary Melville’s father and brother were a major support in the early days.
