Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Moise.
Erica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Despite having a stellar resume, I’ve had the misfortune of being bored at every job I’ve ever had….except Real Estate. I was making fairly decent money at my corporate jobs in the high rise buildings with nice perks which ultimately meant nothing; I wasn’t being challenged and was only realizing a fraction of my potential. After quitting every law and finance job I’ve had in corporate America. I was broke, depressed and directionless.
All my peers had either remained in their positions/fields for years on end or gone to graduate school and I was the lone wolf interested in doing neither. I had a growing interest in Entrepreneurship and after a few failed attempts, I can definitely admit that I didn’t know what I was doing. At all.
I fell into real estate almost randomly. My sister Rebecca, also disillusioned with the corporate world made a sudden decision to attend real estate school. Soon after that, I saw her boss up, close deals and take control of her time and energy. A lightbulb went off in my head and I realized that was what I was missing: an opportunity for leadership. Needless to say, it wasn’t too long after that when I decided to enroll in to real estate school myself.
I can honestly say that I learned more about how the world works by being in the field than I ever would had I stayed in corporate. I found the missing piece to my professional puzzle and I couldn’t be happier. I have been in countless homes, met people from across the globe, and negotiated my ass off.
I started my YouTube show “The Deal Estate” to share my perspective of the industry and provide value to those who are thinking of joining or who want to learn more.
Has it been a smooth road?
I wish! When I first started I was never taught how to show a home, how to negotiate with an owner or how to close a deal. My learning was trial by fire and it was quite the journey. I’ll never forget when a well-known millionaire landlord yelled at me and told me never to call him again because my client changed her mind at the last minute and the deal fell through, Totally not my fault but I thought to myself “if a millionaire doesn’t yell at you, are you really doing real estate?”
Another struggle is the reality of unpredictable income when you work strictly on commission. The phrase “eat what you kill” is real in this field, that’s what makes it so competitive. Budgeting and living below your means is crucial because for the most part you don’t know where your next dollar is coming from. Conversely, never count your commission before the deal is closed because things happen—deals fall apart, applications get rejected, someone changes their mind, another opportunity comes up, tragedy strikes etc. so don’t get excited too early, I had to really live lean because real estate can be feast or famine and I was forced to learn how to be smart with my money because nothing is guaranteed. Sometimes I missed getting a regular paycheck but nothing can replace the thrill of the chase.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I do real estate in the Greater Boston market and have been licensed for two years. I specialize in luxury leasing. I am known for hosting my growing YouTube show “The Deal Estate” where I chronicle and reflect on my adventures in real estate. I am most proud of placing people in the homes they desire and executing a flawless transition. What sets me apart from others is that I was born and raised in Boston and understand the market very well. I have the zeal of a hunter so negotiating on behalf of my clients comes easily to me.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely. Boston has one of the most robust real estate markets in the country. Every newbie agent would be lucky to start out in Boston because the local economy partially dictates the cost of living and demonstrates why Boston is a consistently desirable city. There are brokerages everywhere in the city which means there are opportunities for success.
