Meet Eli Cedrone

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eli Cedrone.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Drawing was something I did quite naturally from a very young age and I’ve never doubted for a moment that I possessed the art sprit. After graduation from the School of Art & Design, (Suffolk University) I began my career in Bermuda, at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising, working as a designer and art director. During this time, I had the opportunity to study in Florence, Italy for the summer. This experience laid the foundation for classical painting and the techniques of the great masters.

I spent 6 years working in Bermuda and enjoyed every moment but it was time to explore other places so I moved to Laguna Beach, CA in 1987, working as an editorial designer and Illustrator. The plein air movement was going through a renaissance at this time and I discovered the joys of painting outdoors.

After nearly 10 years in CA, I moved back to the Boston area and continued my studies at The Museum of Fine Arts School and The Academy of Realist Art and began my career as a professional artist and instructor. As my work expanded I began to find representation at a number of galleries including the Copley Society of Art, Boston, the oldest art organization in the country. I’ve been honored to win several awards including Portrait Society of America, Oil Painters of America and the Guild of Boston Artists.

As an international painting instructor, I’ve managed to combine my love of teaching and travel. I’ve also been the recipient of several residencies and fellowships, which are a great way to paint and study at locations all over the world. Recently I’ve had the pleasure of teaching in Bermuda where I’ll be offering workshops and weekly classes beginning this November. For a full listing of workshops including France, Italy and Portugal, visit my website: www.elicedrone.com. To read about my creative journey, follow me on Blogger: https://artfulhand.blogspot.com

Please tell us about your art.
“I’ve always been influenced by the power of images to express ideas and emotions. Painting is a process of discovery and decision making where disparate elements pull together until the image is clearly expressed. I’m often drawn to the human form where figures exist both in representational and painterly worlds and will I’ll often explore a narrative theme in order to capture the emotional power of a moment in time. I feel that common, everyday things can be beautiful and resonant without being manipulative or artificially provocative.

Landscape painting for me is a journey in search of something that evokes a personal response to nature beyond the obvious and descriptive. Ultimately my concerns are with the expressive qualities of light captured with paint. I’m inspired by the fabric of which our environment is woven. Daily surroundings that show a visual patina of time speak to me; the alchemy between what is transient and what is solid. Contemporary Impressionism best describes my style.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I think it’s important to stay focused and develop your work without outside influences, but there comes a time to reach beyond the studio and enjoy the company of other artists. Art societies are a great way to stay connected as well as weekly, drop-in painting sessions. One of the ways in which I connect to the public is through painting on location. This experience brings the studio outdoors and allows me to share my work and ideas with people I meet.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work is represented by Cecil Byrne Gallery, Charleston, SC; Gallery Antonia, Chatham, MA; Charles Fine Arts Gallery & Williams Fine Art, Gloucester, MA; and more recently at Gallery 117, Hamilton, Bermuda. Paintings are also available through my studio or may be purchased through my on-line gallery at www.elicedrone.com
