Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Carlin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I first began my career as a solo artist (known as Hazel Bloom) after parting ways with my former band, Backwards Dancer (Equal Vision Records). At that time, I had been in countless amounts of bands that never seemed to work out due to conflicting personalities as well as priorities.
With music being my main motive in life, I took those experiences as learning lessons. I decided that if I want music to be my career, I need to take full control of the music as well as the business aspect. At that time I decided to pursue a solo career in music under the moniker Hazel Bloom. Relying solely on my self for writing the music, performing, and business planning, it has definitely been a lot of work. However, I find it rewarding seeing my self-grow as a person, as well as my music career.
I also started this solo career as part of a healing process. Hazel Bloom is a platform I use to express feelings related to depression, anxiety and personal life experiences. It’s truly beautiful to me that I can create an art form that signifies a specific point in time in my life. A type of time machine I can look back on and personally feel what I was going through at the time. I’ve always known that nothing rewarding comes easy. To get to where you want to be it takes discipline, perseverance, and courage to keep going even after countless failures.
I’ve had a lot of failures, but I’ve learned from every single one of them and they are helping me shape my music career. I have learned a lot over the years and I’m excited to keep learning more in order to advance my music, meet new people, and get to where I want to be. I know I have the potential and I fully believe in my self. Sometimes it’s hard to find something to believe in, but when you find it, never let go.
Even when people knock you down and don’t believe in you, you always have to remind yourself to get back up and keep going. I always remind myself that if I keep working hard, I will succeed.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a relatively new artist, I haven’t had many struggles to face with Hazel Bloom, yet. I have learned a lot from past experiences so that has helped pave the way so far.
However, being a solo artist means taking on all aspects of the music and business by myself. It has been a lot to adapt to and has taken a lot more self-discipline and planning on my end. Learning to budget correctly for upcoming releases takes a little more effort being solely reliant on one income, but everything has a learning curve.
With the new music I will be releasing, I will need to start looking more into tour planning, marketing, and press coverage, so that will all be a learning curve I will need to familiarize myself with!
Please tell us about Hazel Bloom.
Hazel Bloom is a stylistically unique Indie Pop Musician from Central, Massachusetts USA. Being heavily influenced by pop culture, you can expect influences from Electropop to R&B to Indie rock elements in Hazel Bloom’s music.
Hazel Bloom takes pride in and strives to make music that induces a feeling of all emotions accompanied by heartfelt lyrical composition and melodies. I feel that some popular musicians shy away from the emotional side of art. With my music, you will never find a song absent of emotion or feeling.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
If I had to choose one memory it would be back from 2004. I remember it was a summer afternoon in August. I had just turned 10 years old and I popped my Now 16 CD into my CD player. I was in my backyard jamming to this CD with my mom. The song that came on that totally changed my life was Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard.
It was a genre that I had never heard before. The Pop type vocals mixed with a more punk sound resonated with me like I couldn’t believe. It was at that moment I realized that I wanted to make music that gives people the same feeling I felt that day. A feeling of euphoria that makes you feel fully connected with yourself and others around you.
That year, for the first time in my life I also got to see the Boston Red Sox win a world series for the first time in 86 years!
