Meet Craig and Emily Williams of Williams Family Baking Company in Malden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig and Emily Williams.

Craig, Emily – please share your story with us.
Craig spent ten years working in restaurants and bakeries. All along, we had always had a dream to create our own business or open our own bakery-cafe. After many years of discussing ways to do this, we finally took a leap of faith and launched a Kickstarter campaign to get things rolling. Our friends and family supported our dream and we were officially in business as of January 2017. While we eventually hope to open a brick and mortar location, we’ve been able to successfully operate our business renting space in a commercial kitchen. Our business has been a great mix of small and large catering orders and local wholesale clientele. This summer we have been at the Kendall Square Farmers’ Market on Thursdays which has been a great way to showcase our food.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have our hands full – as Emily continues to work full time in higher education and we have two small children. Juggling schedules and time for sales/deliveries/production, etc. is not always easy. Some nights Craig finds himself in the kitchen past midnight; however, he loves what he does and the passion for the food created.

Williams Family Baking Company – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We started this business for our family and from the love that we have for one another and great baked goods. Our brand is all about welcoming you into our family and introducing you to a little piece of that love through our chocolate chip cookies, pies and decadent brownies. We specialize in providing our customers with delicious, wholesome, well-made desserts made from scratch and using the best quality ingredients. We aim to feature seasonal ingredients wherever possible and supporting other small business as much as we can.

We have a reputation (thanks in part to our biggest wholesale partner, Jitters Cafe in Melrose) for our chocolate chip cookies – one fan even emailed us to say they were better than her mother’s cookies! Craig loves to take American classic desserts and put his own spin on them. He makes a version of an “Oreo” that uses a chocolate pretzel shortbread cookie with our sons’ names stamped in them filled with a delicious caramel buttercream. They’re the perfect combination of salty and sweet.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For us, success is measured in a few different ways. We want to ensure that we leave our customers happy with both the taste of the food and the experience that we’ve provided. It’s always been our hope that we can support our kids and show them the benefit of hard work and doing what you love.
