Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Doody.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my journey 13 years ago in Ireland where I got my diploma from CIBTAC and then from CIDESCO, which is the highest qualification you can receive in my industry.
In both exams, I graduated with honors and too of my class. These course took me 2 years and I had to do 1000 hours in spa before I could get my diplomas which of course I did. From here I went on to work in the most prestigious our spas in Cork, Ireland for 6 years. In 2009 I moved to Boston where I managed to get a position in a spa and after 3 years here I decided it was time to go out on my own and the dream began. I first rented a room in a hair salon and quickly built a client base that allowed me to renovate a small 2 bed spa on west Squantum St, Quincy… I really loved it here but again I started to outgrow this place, my client base was expanding to a point it was time to add staff. There was a new construction right across from me so I went and invested into what is now our new location and grew my staff to 6 of us… Mainly Irish girls I have working for me as they are more high trained than girls here in Mass.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road… with any business there has been struggles. At the beginning I had to work a lot of hours sometimes up to 7 days a week to keep clients happy and build that client base that I have today, I even went back to work 10 days after giving birth to my youngest daughter so the business wouldn’t be affected.. Those where my earlier struggles which actually now feel easier then been an employer. Now I do have a great bunch of girls right now but I have had real struggles with ex-employee and finding people that meet my standards is very hard here like I said the schooling for esthetics here isn’t where it should be all you need is 300 hours in school and your qualified, this to me is baffling and dangerous you have people doing a job that they shouldn’t be doing.
Please tell us about Ireland beauty.
Well we are mainly a skin clinic, waxing experts and makeup artistry would be our main focus skin been number one… personally my passion is taking people from that point where they feel like they will never have amazing skin and then giving it too them, there so much gratification for me too see the progression and doing this with no prescription just good education and amazing products. Next is waxing here we strive to give the client the most efficient wax but the least discomfort in fact I have my own wax made for the business as I couldn’t find a product on the market that offered a wax to my standard. I actually am going to be selling this wax to other spas and salons and going to train them to in how to use this wax. Then we have an amazing makeup artist trained in one of the most prestigious makeup course in Dublin honestly she’s just awesome. And then we do eyelash extensions using only best products and spray tan which I get shipped in from Australia.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have been wiser about hiring staff and done more vetting. I’m really easy going as a person and at times that has really worked against me… but apart from that nothing else.
