Meet of Boston String Ensemble in Cambridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to .

, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my first string quartet as a child performing at special events through Northeastern Iowa. Even as a middle schooler, I realized my passion for delighting people and bringing joy to them during the most memorable events in their lives. As an adult, my desire to do this grew, and as a young college student, I had the opportunity to perform at many special events throughout New England.

However, I found that the culture had begun to change. The music that we were playing didn’t reflect the personal experiences of those that we were playing it for. While the people we performed for enjoyed the music of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart, much of their life story had been lived in connection with Coldplay, Michael Jackson, or U2.

And so, I resolved to meet people where they were by providing them with the music that defined their lives.

Boston String Ensemble was formed out of that childhood goal to delight people and bring them joy. And as the multi-year award winners of Best of Boston, we continue to provide people throughout New England with a unique experience that speaks directly to their life story at the pivotal moments that shape their futures.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Several of our core team members have started families of our own. I myself have 4 young children under 6 years old. This has certainly presented its own challenges (including getting up several times in the middle of the night to help my twin infants go back to bed!).

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am most proud that we are able to provide our customers with the creative freedom to select any piece of music that they desire for their event through our ability to create custom arrangements of the music, rehearse and learn the music, and perform it on their special day.

We are also multi-year winners of Best of Boston.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up on a ranch in mid-western, Iowa. I had an interest in music from a young age and was very competitive. I played several other instruments as a child, including French Horn, piano, and trumpet. I expected to go to college as a French Horn player but received a full scholarship as a violinist instead.

I’ve always been fascinated by the culture. And have found myself studying the cultures of the world since I was a young person. This also extended to my interest in a variety of different types of music.
