Meet Allison Fraser of Prototype Media Group in Waltham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Fraser.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Allison. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After graduating from Boston College as a Communications major, I landed a job doing social media for a well-known national brand. At the time, businesses were just starting to put marketing efforts into social media, so I was really at the forefront of the industry. To be quite honest, I wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing, since social media courses weren’t an option during my college years. It was a lot of trial and error and figuring things out (and making stuff up) as I went along.

Graphic design and social media come hand-in-hand. Graphics are a major part, if not one of the most important parts, of creating a social media strategy. I had to quickly learn to design in order to accurately portray the message I was trying to get across – whether it was to sell a product or create brand awareness.

After working for other people for over 7 years collectively, I decided it was time for a change! I wanted more freedom to be able to participate in my daughter’s school field trips and be more present during the week, so I made the tough decision to leave a great paying job to start off on my own. It was quite scary, but I took it day by day. After freelancing for about 6-8 months, I was able to build up a consistent client base. With the overwhelming support and guidance from my boyfriend, who is an entrepreneur himself, Prototype Media Group was born!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was very tough in the beginning. Not receiving a consistent paycheck was very scary. There were weeks when I would literally have no work coming in, which meant no money coming in. I would have to dip into my savings to be able to keep afloat. Lucky for me, my boyfriend had a major influence early on with the company. There were times when I would find myself browsing job listings and sending my resume to different companies. However, with his help, I put more effort into marketing, networking and building relationships. I stuck through it and was able to really build a solid foundation for the company.

Prototype Media Group – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The company, Prototype Media Group, is a boutique creative agency specializing in the visual communication of new and existing brands, small businesses and special events. We offer graphic design, web design, social media management, content creation and branding services. We do things from party flyers, to custom Snapchat geofilters, to web design and blog management, to running a brand’s entire social media presence across multiple networks. Our prices are affordable and our customer service is what really sets us apart from other companies. No matter how big or small a job is, we really make each client feel as if they’re our only priority.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is freedom. Being able to work when I want to (which ironically, is usually more than 9-5) and having the ability to take time off when necessary has made it all worth it. As long as I’m happy and making money along the way, that’s all that matters!
