Meet Abby Ouellette of Abby Ouellette Illustration

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Ouellette.

Abby, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always known that I wanted to be an artist, it’s in my family. My mom is an art teacher and having her always breaking out the crafts and paint gave me a clear path of what I wanted to be when I grew up. It was never a doubt in my mind. Learning that illustration was my path was pretty easy for me, and I am so passionate about it.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’d say as a current student, the rockiest parts of my road are still to come when I proceed to make a career out of my illustration practice. However, on a personal level, it has been difficult because when you are in a BFA program, a lot of it is about finding yourself and what you want to say through your artwork. It is not the easiest discovery because we are always changing and growing. I put a lot of pressure on myself to get this right, but I think that it’s important to step back and remember why I am doing this.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Abby Ouellette Illustration – what should we know?
I tackle Illustration as mixed-media exploration of conveying imagery. I am much more attracted to unconventional ways of telling a story, it is so much fun for me. Learning to figure out how I work and creating in a way that makes sense with collage has been a huge part of my understanding through my experience at MassArt.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family especially has been extremely supportive of me through helping me through my education. They understand that this career path is the best decision I have ever made, and never fail to advise me through my path.

The connections that I have made at MassArt: my friends, peers, and professors, have always been a driving force for me and I am forever grateful.
