Conversations with the Inspiring Lauren Hawkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Hawkins.

Lauren, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Everyone has passions in life. Mine happen to be horses and photography. While I never had a DSLR camera prior to last year, the camera on my cell phone filled the role for many years. (Yes, I would chose a cell phone based on the camera ratings and capabilities) My now husband and I had a long conversation last year while we were planning our own wedding about the future. I told him I would love to pursue photography as a profession and with his encouragement that is where it all started. I was also able to secure a new full time job, which allows me to focus on photography on my weekends. I never thought I would be trying to build my own company/brand, but I am and I am truly loving the ride!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes and no. The photography community in New England is so amazing and have really been a pillar of support in terms of building my business and providing first hand advice from their own growths and struggles. The thing that gets me is I am what you could call a perfectionist. I have been inspired by so many other photographers across the country through social media and often find myself comparing my work and wishing I had their success. But, just like me, they all started somewhere. They didn’t instantly have a booming full time photography business that allowed them to pursue their passions everyday. They had to work for it, and it takes a lot of work and time.

For any young women out there who are just starting out and find themselves sucked into the comparison struggle, do your best to focus on other areas. Focus on what you are doing for you and your business and stay positive. We are always our toughest critics and sometimes its hard to step away from that.

What should we know about Lauren Hawkins Photography? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I mainly offer photography services for weddings and portraits. I offer wedding services throughout New England and I am hoping to branch into destination weddings in the near future. I also offer photography sessions for couples and individuals who are looking to add some professional photos to their social media pages or celebrate a big life event. I even photograph a few horse shows ever summer.

I would consider myself a natural light photographer. I do not use any fancy lighting systems with my camera and usually the only time I will use a flash is for wedding receptions. I love capturing the bright beautiful colors and being able to deliver photos to my clients that are timeless and will never go out of style.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I have utilized social media to the fullest. As soon as I bought my first DSLR Canon camera, I joined numerous Facebook groups that offer advice/support for other photographers. Whether it is getting together to discuss social media, retaining leads, pricing or just life outside of our business it has given me such a feeling of strength. Like hey, I can do this!
