Conversations with the Inspiring Jessica Anderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Anderson.

Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my fitness journey 30 pounds overweight at the age of 21. In high school, I was always the skinniest girl at the party. I didn’t weigh over 100 pounds until junior year. I ate whatever I wanted and didn’t gain a pound. Until freshman year of college. I drank minimum of 4 days per week, ate horribly, and didn’t exercise. This went on for about two years. People around me would comment on my weight gain, but I didn’t care. Until one day, I decided I couldn’t do it anymore. The crazy partying every weekend, binge eating, and not caring about my body. I started working out at a Boston sports club nearby. I didn’t know what I was doing. I did cardio and abs for the first few months, then watched YouTube videos and the trainers around me to try and learn new exercises and use correct form.

One day at the gym, a trainer named John approached me. I had been waitressing for months and had some money saved, and agreed to train with him. John changed my life. He taught me how to create a workout plan that actually works. After realizing what an impact John had on my life, I decided that I wanted to do something in the fitness field. I decided to first get certified as a spin instructor to make sure I definitely wanted to be in the fitness field. I taught my own class for a year before picking up a job at a small group fitness studio while studying to become a certified personal trainer. Fast forward a year later, and I have been working as a trainer for 8 months now and have my own online business and website. Never give up on your dreams. I took a risk, leaving school, leaving my secure waitressing job, deciding to fully commit to fitness. I can honestly say it’s the best thing I ever did for myself.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been anything but a smooth road. I fell so many times in the beginning. But what’s important is that I stood up again. And I didn’t give up. It’s hard. In the beginning, it’s the hardest thing in the world. But if you never give up, you will always achieve your dreams.

What should we know about your business? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in weight loss and functional training. My clients range from sage 15-81. I love working with young girls who are trying to better their bodies. I also love working with my elderly clients doing functional work that will help them in their everyday life. I would say I am known for helping people. I offer cheaper online plans, so young girls from Instagram can learn how to strength train and create a workout plan. That’s the ultimate reason I got into fitness, to help people.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I think that in the fitness world, women feel pressured to look a certain way. We see these beautiful women on Instagram with a huge backside and no waist, and for most, it is just not realistic. I think as women we should stop comparing ourselves, and instead be proud of how far we have come. No one is perfect, and we all have insecurities.
