Meet Zack Bonfilio of American Tile and Remodeling in Quincy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zack Bonfilio.

Zack, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I actually started my company after moving back here to work for a contractor. There were a few false promises from that employer and long story short I ended up flat broke with nowhere to live. I slept in my truck and on friends’ couches, worked three jobs but got a tax ID and LLC with what little money I had and promoted myself heavily on Facebook for anyone looking for projects. I only had a bag of tools back then and a beat up truck, I was still homeless but the first call I received for a decent size job, I quit all three part time jobs and put everything into the project. Because of the lack of experience pricing jobs that one didn’t make me as much as I hoped but I got another small job shortly after, and another, and another. I kept going and slowly built up the company. After about a year I had jobs coming in more steadily and referrals got more and more frequent. It was a very tough road but I made it to where I am by sticking with it and not giving up.

Has it been a smooth road?
Like I said, starting a company while homeless is pretty much the roughest road you can be on haha. Even after becoming established and getting my own place, hiring employees, making some money doing what I love, there were so many challenges. I had no business experience so doing books and payroll, getting ins, etc. was all very overwhelming and I thought about giving up several times. The only thing that kept me going was knowing if I gave up I would be back where I started. The road now is still a little bumpy, but much smoother than when I started

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the American Tile & Remodeling story. Tell us more about the business.
My company specializes in kitchen and bathroom remodeling with a specialty in tile and stone installation. I started as a carpenter, then went on to finish carpentry, worked as a plumbers apprentice, so I pretty much know how to do most things in the trade, but I love doing tile work. It’s different every time and we get to put together some beautiful projects for people which makes them very happy.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Hopefully it keeps growing like it has been. I would love to see the company expand and get into commercial tile installation. If I stay right where I am I would still be happy, we do some great work with amazing clients.
