Today we’d like to introduce you to Wynne Huang.
Wynne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had an interest in skin and performing procedures. It was one of the most difficult decisions that I had to make–specialize in dermatology/plastic surgery or become a family physician. I ultimately became a family physician because that was my image of a “traditional doctor”–a physician who could provide comprehensive health care for individuals and their families, across all ages. I wanted to have the capacity to treat friends, family, and neighbors.
In my spare time, I enjoy art as a hobby. Medical aesthetics allows me to combine my passion for art and my desire to help people. The needle is my paintbrush, and your face is my canvas.
In my 15 years of caring for patients, it has become clear to me that when people look better, they feel better about themselves. I recall one of my “regular” family medicine patients that struggled with depression and pain from fibromyalgia. After I gave her some injectable to give her a “refreshed look” she told me that she felt confident enough to go on her first date in 15 years!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Over the last few years, the non-invasive cosmetic industry has grown exponentially. There are med spas popping up on every street corner. Last year, a new medspa opened next door to us, less than 50 feet away.
How does a small business stand out in this growing industry?
Many small businesses offer deals through Groupon or Social Living. We offered specials through Groupon for a while, knowing that we were taking a financial risk, possibly attracting one time clients that were simply looking for a deal. We have shifted our focus to attracting patients with our expertise and personalized care and attention.
Larger businesses have the financial means to advertise on TV and radio. It has been a struggle to 1) determine the most economical way to advertise our business and 2) stand out from the competition.
We have tried a variety of methods to increase recognition of our business, including: magazine ads, mailings, and attendance at bridal shows and wellness fairs.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My family medicine background provides me with skills that make me a better aesthetic provider: 1) listening to patients, 2) patient education, 3) and establishing long-term, trusting relationships with patients.
I begin each encounter with the question-“how can I help you today?” After being a family physician and aesthetic provider for over a decade, I recognize that everyone has that “one thing” that bothers them. It could be the faintest wrinkle on their face. I understand the importance of listening to a patient’s concerns and addressing their issues. I may think that there are more pressing issues. But, if I do not address a patient’s concerns, they will leave feeling unsatisfied.
By the same, token, I feel that it is my responsibility to educate patients. Any medspa can provide a service, such as treating your “11’s” with Botox, or improving wrinkles with fillers. As a family physician, one of my responsibilities is educating patients. I run a weekly “wellness group” that teaches patients about mindful eating, stress management, etc. I want to provide patients with the tools to make and maintain healthy lifestyle changes. Similarly, our medspa offers a variety of options to treat each condition. For example, we can treat facial wrinkles with Botox, fillers, or radiofrequency. I feel that it is important to educate patients by providing them with sufficient information so that they can participate in making informed decisions regarding their treatment plan. We will work with you to create an individualized treatment plan that meets your desired goals, budget, and time frame.
I pride our office on the long-term, trusting relationships that we establish with our patients. Patient have commented that we make them feel comfortable and well-informed. Aging is not static. I like to educate patients on the science behind the aging process. This helps them to understand the journey that we will take together to help them look and feel their best at any age.
It is evident that our patients appreciate our approach, as seen in our online reviews:
“Dr. Huang spends time with you, explaining exactly what she suggests and why. Don’t look for the cheaper prices…”
“I can absolutely depend on Dr. Huang for outstanding care, personalized service, and natural results.”
“Dr. Huang truly listens to your desires and expectations, and interprets them expertly onto her canvas.”
“I have found my forever medspa!”
What were you like growing up?
In my high school yearbook, one of my teachers wrote that I was a “Renaissance woman”. I had a broad range of interests, including: art, music (playing the piano and violin), horseback riding (ring spearing and barrel racing), and of course being very studious.
