Today we’d like to introduce you to William Higgins.
William, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was a home builder for 30 years and when the real estate market tanked in 2007-08 I was a free man. No work. My wife suggested we look into consignment opportunities. There was a store that was for sale but the owner got seller’s remorse and changed her mind. We started to look for other possibilities. I found a space in an old brick factory that was for rent and jumped in. My wife had retail experience which gave us confidence and we are now going into our 10th year.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not easy as most start-ups are not easy. First it always takes more money than you think and after 2 yrs. My wife had a severe hearing loss and couldn’t continue in a public arena. We started with a new staff and created our store in our own image of what a store should be; positive attitude and welcoming atmosphere.
Please tell us about Still Life Home.
We are a 10,000 sq. ft. consignment store. Our inventory is first furniture and then women’s clothing, decor, rugs lamps and most other home furnishings. I also like to take many other items that I feel would have appeal. My first thought is this something I can sell and am I willing to try until the market says no interest? I do not profile. I want people to be surprised at what we have and happy to browse through personal history and memories. I am most proud that the store still exists because many don’t last but a year or two.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Growing up on a farm and doing a lot of reading.

This is the best store ever!! I have found so many interesting pieces for my home. I visit regularly and am ever disappointed with their selection and prices. The staff is so helpful. A true gem in Hudson.
