Today we’d like to introduce you to Walter Chomak.
Walter, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began my career in Information Technology in 1997. I loved everything about Information Technology and continually sought out more challenging opportunities.
Fortunately, at this time, Information Technology professionals were in high demand, so job jumping was not frowned upon at all. As I moved up the ranks, jumping from job to job, I recognized I ultimately wanted to work for Microsoft. I spent the next 9 years honing my skills and was hired by Microsoft in 2006 as a consultant.
By 2009 I was consulting in Cloud related technologies for Microsoft and in 2011 I convinced myself there was going to be a huge shortage of Cloud Consultants – IT professionals who could guide customers from their on-premise technologies to the Cloud. I saw this as an opportunity to start my own business as a consultant. In October 2011 I left Microsoft to launch Mobieus Systems, LLC – a consulting firm specializing in Cloud Computing.
Mobieus was successful – we had more work than we could handle but scaling was proving very difficult and costly plus I wanted to figure out a way to tap into the monthly reoccurring revenue model used by Cloud Service Providers. I decided to shift away from consulting and directly into providing cloud services. I began designing mCloud in 2016 and launched our first customer in early 2017. mCloud is Mobieus Systems’ own private cloud platform designed to deliver a wide variety of Cloud services.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
At times I can’t even find the road. I continue to work to keep costs down while ensuring customer satisfaction. For example, we did not begin work on our website until after we had real paying customers. We’ve broached a major mile-stone – mCloud works well and we continue to sign customers up. We no longer need to discuss whether mCloud will work.
With the technical challenges behind us, for now, we are tackling a truly terrifying challenge – Advertising, Marketing, and Social Media. It feels like my first day of high school all over again – its just another popularity contest but worse because money can buy popularity. We invested heavily in perfecting mCloud and did not consider the advertising component – just another lesson learned. We are trying to organically grow the mCloud brand, but paid advertising is inevitable. We are gaining momentum and with the steady increase of new customers, we will soon consider engaging with a professional firm to take us to the next level. The fear is this is a huge investment with no assured results.
Please tell us about Mobieus Systems, LLC.
Mobieus Systems, LLC is a Cloud Service Provider (CSP). We built our own private cloud from the ground up. It’s named mCloud. mCloud offers a wide range of Cloud-based services but we specialize in virtualization – specifically hosted virtual desktops (HVDs). HVDs is the Cloud’s answer to a traditional desktop computer. mCloud provides users secure access to their cloud-based desktop (digital workspace) from any device. Thin Client, Desktop, Laptop, Tablet or Mobile Phone.
Mobieus Systems is known for our no-nonsense approach to customer satisfaction – we give our customers what they want with no gimmicks or exceptions. Just moving your traditional desktop to the cloud doesn’t necessarily bring any value because you are also taking all your traditional desktop problems with you plus adding the additional task of the move itself. That is a poor value proposition to your customers. At Mobieus we bundle both essential services and features into your low monthly subscription fee. We will move your data and applications for you, We will configure your devices to access mCloud.
All mCloud subscriptions come standard with 100 GB of protected storage this means you never have to worry about backing up your data, We do it for you. We provide both Antivirus and Intrusion Detection services so you can rest assured your HVD is secure. We also manage all Operating System and Application updates. Your HVD will never automatically reboot in the middle of your workday again because of overdue updates and you will never have to worry about updates or patches again. Your HVD is dedicated it is not shared with anyone else. We do not charge for bandwidth or data transfers. We even proactively monitor performance to ensure the best possible customer experience.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have developed the Advertising and Marketing components alongside the build of mCloud. My biggest problem is, I evaluated everything through my eyes and not that of our future customers so often I let perfect get in the way of good and often got hung up on things absolutely no one else would notice except me so many wasted hours as a result.
Although not seeking external capital to start seems like a noble idea – ultimately it would have made thing move much faster and allowed us to “pop” onto the scene rather than an extremely slow fade in. I would certainly have sought out funding knowing then what I know now.
