Meet Vincent Foley of MacNeil Glass

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vincent Foley.

Vincent, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up I worked a few different jobs for some businesses that my Dad owned and always had the itch to be a business owner myself. I followed in my Dad’s footsteps and went to Bentley University and decided I wanted to major in Finance. I figured that long term, the world of Finance would help me with my dreams of owning a business and being my own boss.

Throughout college, I worked at a bank as a teller and slowly but surely climbed the ranks within the bank, while working toward my degree. At the time I graduated from school, I was offered an Assistant Branch Manager position and figured that was a great way to start a career in the Finance world. Just a year later, I accepted a Branch Manager position role at a different bank at just 24 years old.

This wasn’t exactly owning my own business, but I enjoyed my work in the banking world and really thrived on the business development side of banking. I settled into the position and really yearned to become a Commercial Banker as my career progressed, obviously a different path from when I was younger.

Fast forward a year and a half and I was approached by my uncle, John MacNeil, about the possibility of taking over his family company, MacNeil Glass. I had no idea about the industry, line of work, etc., but I thought that this was a great opportunity for me to own my own business, just like I had always imagined. I was nervous at the thought of the transition, but I was assured I could pick up the business side very quick with my background in Finance and that I could slowly learn the trade bit by bit, each and every day. I loved the thought of the challenge and decided that I wanted to pursue this opportunity. After a few meetings, John and I worked out a plan that would mutually benefit both sides of the agreement and the deal became official.

On October 1st, 2015, I officially became the owner of MacNeil Glass. Of course, there was a learning curve when it came to managing new employees, learning the industry, and learning the business itself, but I worked hard to overcome it all. My Uncle John was right there every step of the way and still lends a hand whenever I may need to lean on him. Every day I learn something new, and the business is still thriving, as it has been since 1951. I finally have realized what being your own boss and owning your own business is like, and I love every minute of it.

Has it been a smooth road?
I would certainly say I faced obstacles over the course of the last few years. I think the terminology and lingo in the industry is something to get used to. Learning the tricks of the trade and how things should be done, when you have never had to do them before, can be an uphill battle as well.

MacNeil Glass has had such a tremendous reputation since 1951 and I wanted to make sure I kept that reputation exactly at the same standard when I took over. That continues to be a very important obstacle that I work around every single day. I work hard to make sure that even though it has been 2 and a half years since I took over, there is a fluid and seamless transition to the ownership change. The goal is that existing customers and brand new customers experience the same service that has defined MacNeil Glass.
