Meet Uldison Ferreira of Cassis Bakery in Beverly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Uldison Ferreira.

Uldison, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was always day dreaming, jumping at any opportunity to fell creative, to make things. Kid’s choir, church theater, drawing, painting, sculpting, wood carving, flower making, baking, sewing. I did it all. And, in the process, I made my parents’ lives a living hell by constantly asking for supplies that, most of the time, they had never even heard of.

Soon my village got too small for me and I moved away from home. More and more, day dreaming got left behind me, back in the village, and life got more serious. Before I realized it, I had a tech job and art was just a hobby for the weekends. I jumped from one school to another, until I finally ended up in drama school. And it was as magical as I always dreamed it would be. But to be an actor one needs more than day dreaming.

I moved from Brazil to Boston, and for a good while there was no more day dreaming. Until I found Cassis and Dimitri, who turned out to be the best boss I have ever had. For the past 16 years I have been blessed with a job that allowed me to day dream and be practical, marrying these two parts of my life. Slowly I have been working on expanding the wedding cakes and specialty cakes side of the business, always with full support from Dimitri.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t. And I would not have it any other way. There is so much I had to leave behind and there is so much more I want to accomplish. And I want all that, all the problems, the victories and the defeats to inform and enrich my work.

At Cassis the daily struggle is to combine productivity with a work that demands so much attention to details.

Please tell us about Cassis Bakery.
Cassis Bakery is specialized in fine European-style pastries and cakes, custom wedding cakes and special occasion cakes.

Owner, Master Baker and Pastry Chef Dimitri Tsypkin has been making delectable desserts since 1975. He is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, a world famous center of culinary education. And in 2000 he decided to open Cassis Bakery with the goal of providing a creative solution for a variety of dessert menus, by offering an extensive line of pastries and cakes in which anyone can find a favorite.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
There are so many: visiting my grandparents in the farm on Sundays, eating mangoes on top of the tree, watching my grandpa work. But my favorite memory is the holiday lunches at my house, with the special guests, usually one of my dad’s friends, and soda. Yes, soda. The holidays was the only time my parents would let us drink soda. It was so special and wonderful. God Bless my crazy parents!
