Today we’d like to introduce you to Nishat Khan.
Nishat, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a full time teacher and educator at my core, but I started curating my Instagram after college when I wanted to hold on to the artistic side of myself. I studied photography in high school and was always hosting little photoshoots as a child with friends. I didn’t want to lose that sense of creativity, fun and capturing beautiful moments.
It has become something of a second full time job, as I’ve been able to monetize through sponsorships, partnerships and attending events. Because I don’t rely on it as a source of income, I get to be picky with the partnerships I create. However, I’ve been able to work with incredible brands that I truly love and believe in, which has been so exciting for me. It’s a whole industry that I essentially fell into by accident. The happiest kind of accident.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh my gosh, it’s been a slow road. I wouldn’t say smooth. I’m very lucky that Instagram is just a personal portfolio of sorts. I’ve learned so much along the way from sources online, following others and just seeking out the tools I needed. My best advice is to remain professional when it comes to sponsorships and brands. I released an e-guide last month all about what it was like to ‘become’ a microinfluencer, full of advice for others who are looking to do the same! It’s in three parts: content creation, growth and sponsorships. It really outlines how to tackle all 3 of those things in a way that feels manageable and authentic. If you’re just starting your journey on Instagram, my best advice is to be patient. Don’t ever, ever buy followers. I love being on Instagram because of the community of followers I have. It’s real community — who leave real love and comments on my photos. Anyone in the industry will be able to tell if your audience is fake.
We’d love to hear more about @nishatnguyen.
I am a YouTuber (when I have time) and typically post lifestyle photos around Boston. A lot of people who follow me are locals looking to find new spots to eat, visit and explore. I’m well-known for loving donuts, eating all kinds of desserts and wearing very laid-back clothing. I find beauty in things that others might find everyday or mundane. I want people to know that they are able to live a positive and happy life no matter their current circumstances. I always want to exude gratitude for the life I live.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
I am so incredibly inspired by Michelle Obama. It is always people who don’t wish to become role models and then so perfectly rise to the occasion that I’m inspired by. Michelle Obama did and continues to do so much for youth and children in this country. She is someone who was never required to go to the lengths she does to advocate for what she believes in.
In the Instagram world, two ladies who have inspired me greatly are my friends Danielle and Nicole. Danielle runs an account called @bostonbrunchguide. She’s such a go-getter when it comes to seeking out good brunch. She’s very open-minded when it comes to food and people, which is something I really admire about her. My friend Nicole, I haven’t actually met. We’ve known of each other for such a long time. I think back in 2008 or 2009, we both had tumblr accounts. Nicole moved to NYC on her own to pursue her dreams in the fashion industry. She is now running social at Louboutin and running constantly, in general as a triathlete. I can’t imagine that she sleeps enough to be honest, but I have no clue. She’s always up at the crack of dawn to work on all her goals as an athlete before working at Louboutin. I love people who crush expectations like that. You can be more than one thing!
