Today we’d like to introduce you to Naya Barcelona.
Naya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been around art as a child, but started taking a liking to make up once I got to college and started modeling in an on-campus troupe. I also used to do my face up as best as I could when I would go out to events with roommates.
Once I moved to LA and began taking professional classes for makeup, I really immersed myself into the beauty industry and fell completely in love with everything about makeup artistry.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have definitely been a lot of struggles that I went through and even still go through today. It is going to be very difficult to be taken seriously as a beginner, to market yourself, and even just find yourself as a brand in general.
For anyone just starting out, one thing that I can advise is to keep on pushing. There are going to be so many discouraging moments where you will just want to give up on everything. But, continue to push yourself.
Another piece of advice I would give is to never be afraid of new experiences. Try everything at least once. You never know who you will meet or what you might take a liking to.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I specialize in beauty and fashion (print) work but I’m also open to doing special effects makeup as well. Whatever styles allow me to be creative, I’m open to. I love to do more over the top makeup looks and use not so typical colors.
What I’m most proud of as a brand would be that I’ve continued to push myself and always will. I love to be able to say that I’ve never given up. I will usually take on any challenge that I am given.
What separates me apart from others would be that I’m excited to learn and grow. I am so devoted to what I do that I’m willing to unconventional if it means I’ll get the chance to learn from the experience.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
To a young woman just starting out, I would say, don’t be afraid. And that goes for anything. Don’t be afraid to make connections. Don’t be afraid to attend events by yourself if you have no one to go with. Be prepared for rejection at times because nothing comes easy when it comes down to just beginning.
I would also tell her to keep pushing. No matter what downfalls you go through, get up and continue moving towards your ultimate goal.
