Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Gibson.
Lindsay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born into a family of entrepreneurs and athletes. My Scottish grandmother and grandfather, and my Scottish mother and American father, founded and owned their own businesses. They instilled in me an appreciation of the adventure inherent in creating one’s own profession and destiny. In addition, my family adored the outdoors and found many opportunities to hike, ski, swim, always finding solace in nature.
I started running at the age of 11 and discovered its meditative and physical effects. From that tender age on, I was compelled to share my nascent knowledge about the human body and the healing power of movement. I studied Yoga and the Eastern traditions in college, began training people in my early 20s, studied Applied Anatomy and Physiology and received my Master’s of Science Degree. And throughout it all, I ran, taught, practiced yoga, meditated, and helped others navigate their physical challenges and experience the essential beauty of the human body. In my early 30’s – and this took an act of faith and some courage – I started my own business. My mission was to help people feel strong and powerful in their bodies and through this empowerment feel good about themselves, more centered, and appreciative of the world around them. I continued my studies of yoga, meditation, mindfulness and so many other movement genres (Pilates, Gyrotonics, Somatics, martial arts, dance, marathon running, aerobics, strength training, skiing, cross-country skiing, physical therapy, bodywork…). I took from each tradition, bits, and pieces of knowledge and soon evolved my own methodology and became an expert in Therapeutic Yoga.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My personal journey was not always easy. As often happens in life, certain obstacles presented themselves to me and challenged my resilience. Both of my parents died within a few years of each other, their deaths brought great sadness but, inspired me to look for, and ultimately, to find my own heart. Soon after my father died, I ruptured the 2 hamstring tendons and the 3 hamstring muscles in my left leg. The complicated surgery to repair the tendons was a medical miracle. I could walk but, once again, was required to adapt and modify my yoga practice and teaching of yoga. With mindful patience, lots of study of anatomy, and some bursts of fine creative energy and spirit, my rehabilitation led to a new way to approach the practice of yoga and meditation.
There were other, more mundane, yet equally difficult, challenges along the way. A few years ago the real estate landscape in Cambridge radically changed with less civic-minded wealthy developers buying properties and evicting long-term small businesses from their rental spaces. Majestic was one of those businesses. We were forced to close our doors, and then, re-invent ourselves. The Studio is now located in a charming old Cambridge neighborhood where residential buildings stand next to prosperous small businesses. We are a true community that celebrates holidays and seasonal changes together. This crisis, then, led Majestic to a new and more spirited home. In the early days of my career when yoga was not as popular, and small business women rare, it was a struggle to raise money to fund growth and expansion. I persevered in the face of many rejections! For me, each one of these obstacles, though hard, generated learning that I incorporated into my work, and profoundly reinforced my belief in the power of positive thinking and the importance of holding onto faith.
