Meet Trailblazer Laisa Brandao

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laisa Brandao.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Laisa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved from Brazil to the Berkshires at the age of 12, then moved to Framingham 9 years ago. Beauty has always been a huge part of my life growing up. Back in Brazil, I spent a lot of time in my parent’s friend salon, and I remember always putting lipstick on and doing my own hair, and I think that’s where it all began for me. For a while I did makeup on the weekends on friends and family. 5 years ago, I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do, which path to take, and I ended up inside a beauty school classroom, that same day I enrolled myself and began my hair journey. Ever since, I’ve been falling more and more in love with the beauty industry. I currently work doing hair at Trinity Salon in Fitchburg, where I was trained by the amazing Amy @camouflageandbalayage. I still have a lot to learn and I can’t wait to take on more adventures in the beauty business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road for me. My first struggle was the language barrier, at the age of 12, I didn’t speak any English, my parents enrolled me in school and I was forced to spend my days surrounded by people who I could barely communicate with, but I did it, thanks to my amazing ESL teachers. Then, in beauty school the struggle continued. I had trouble learning the technical terms and had to study a lot to keep up. After that, it was fixing the perfect salon to work. I spent a year and three months assisting at a salon, but I felt like the love for the industry was slowly dying, so I searched for a different salon, and found Trinity Salon, I assisted for another 8 months and now I’m taking my own clients. I’m sure the struggles aren’t over, but I’m eager to learn and see what’s waiting for me out there.

I would tell any young women starting in their journey to keep going, never give up, because there will be struggles along the way, just know that it’ll be worth in the end.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about @meltlikeaboss – what should we know?
I’m a hairstylist, specializing in rooted blondes.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I think we’re still proving to everyone, including ourselves, we can have a full time job, a family and still have time to run errands, have hobbies.
