Meet Trailblazer Kristi Sturgeon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristi Sturgeon.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started modeling the summer of 2016 after talking to an old friend from high school who was also modeling. I was extremely self conscious at the time and didn’t like it, figured that could be a good way to change it. I loved taking pictures but also was very shy. I decided to meet up with my friend and her boyfriend, who was the photographer, to see how we could setup our first shoot. Our first shot was at a construction site. Since then, I have loved being in front of the camera. I have worked with a lot of talented people from New England and have learned so much over the years. It is a tough industry but it keeps you on your toes. Within the first year of modeling, my Instagram following had grown substantially. My following has grown to be over 20K.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been the smoothest road. Going into it, I was pretty insecure and was hoping to find myself in the process. I learned quickly that you won’t be able to please everyone. For every fan, there are 10 haters to follow. Instead of letting the haters get to you, you need to use their negativity as fuel. Instead of lowering myself to make petty comments back, I would push myself that much harder. At one point, I was shooting every weekend and some week nights after I got home from my full time job. I didn’t let anything stop me. My biggest piece of advice would be to always keep pushing. Create a name/brand for yourself and stick with it. Your strength and perseverance will be seen!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Model Kristi Ann – what should we know?
I am a plus size model from New Hampshire. I love creating art with like-minded people around me. Modeling makes me happy and it helps me empower other women. I love helping new models jump into the industry and giving them tips/tricks that I have learned over the last 2 years.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Social media helped me find everyone that I have worked with. I would spend hours looking at trending hashtags and other models, plus size and not. As a model, you need to put yourself out there. If you want to work with someone, shoot them a message.
