Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerrie Baldwin.
Kerrie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started styling my dolls’ hair and then anyone who would sit in front of me from my Grandfather to my Aunt.  I knew that I wanted to make this a part of my life somehow. I could instantaneously make them look better and thereafter feel better. The connection that I felt was strong and I knew it could become my passion. My passion led me to pursue my cosmetology license. After graduation, I was an assistant for two years and landed in my first full-time position at a small salon in Dedham. There, I built my book and earned my clientele. I built relationships. I loved making people look and feel good. My next goal was to have my own place to do so. I then approached my boss to buy the business. We agreed. At 23 years old, I embarked upon owning and operating the salon business. I managed 12 years through one of the worst recessions this country endured. While many shops closed, mine continued to thrive. I created ideas, targeted my market, found inventive products. There was much pressure and stress. I knew I must stay strong and grounded. I found my way to my yoga practice as I rode the waves. I fell in love. I fell so in love with it that I decided to learn to teach and began teaching in 2013. I continued my training from there. At the end of 2015, after having achieved many great things, I sold my shop to pursue other interests and focus more on yoga.
Now, I am teaching yoga to young adults with autism as well as traditional vinyasa in local studios. I’m an Ayurvedic yoga specialist, guiding practitioners through nutrition yoga and meditation and highlighting the threading of all things. I am also continuing to build my wedding business which I started in 2008 and working as an independent contractor at local salons. The future is bright and in the next several years, I would like to take my skills and learning experience to build my next great success. The future is unwritten…
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
HA!- nope It has not been a smooth road… however, as they say, a smooth sea never made for a skilled sailor! (I also love sayings…)
I encountered a lot of obstacles along the way. I was the youngest at my salon and also the boss. This was not always well received. I made many changes to an already existing business, which caused a stir as well. People are not always comfortable with change. There were many critics! I dealt with many members of the “good old boys club”, as I like to refer to them. These were old-school types, landlords, town authorities, vendors, etc., who were not supportive of a young woman in a leadership role asserting herself. I stayed the course… things broke, employees failed, expenses arose, products discontinued, the economy crashed… I stayed the course…
My advice is this…
You will struggle- it’s inevitable. You will fall. You will fail. You build a thick skin as you go, but try to always remain soft and connected to your purpose and what lights you up. And you will always get back up. You will try again, learn, redirect, get creative and feel the rush of joy in small moments, and bit by bit, you will start to sail!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kerrie Baldwin Beauty Eversion – what should we know?
My website is www.KerrieBaldwin.com. I am a hairstylist and yoga teacher. I specialize in providing onsite event services. I go on location and provide hair and makeup service as well as guided yoga and meditation. I am very detailed, organized, intuitive and calm. I bring all of this with me to my clients as I prepare them in various ways for important life occasions. Whether through yoga on the mat or in my chair, I bring a sense of personalized care and ease. I like my clients to feel beautiful, confident and calm in their own skin and beautiful, confident and calm outside as well. I like to thread the feeling of the inner and the outer together by truly getting to know how they want to relay their “look.” I use only the finest most natural quality products, so it is an experience of both comfort and luxury. I’m skilled in all the latest style trends for hair and makeup, though my favorite and usually that of my client is when we custom design a style just for them.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Connect with everyone – and help each other. If we all work together – we all thrive. I join groups and stay in touch with all I encounter, through social media, email, blogs, and referrals. You can learn so much from others as they make their way alongside you. It’s nice to refer and help others connect to potential clients as well. Keep creating!
