Meet Trailblazer Kayleigh A Mullen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayleigh A Mullen.

Kayleigh, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
You may call me Kam for short, I’m 21 years old. One word to describe me would be vivid because I’m lively, bright, powerful and I see things clearly. I grew up in Rhode Island, growing up in such a small state there wasn’t much to do besides playing sports or watching makeup tutorials. So, I took dance classes and started my makeup obsession along the way. I have always loved beauty ever since I could remember taking my sister’s makeup to play with. When I was 13, I started to get into modeling, my mom was my “manager” so to say always booking me photo shoots and fashion shows with a lot of Boston based groups. I met Nicole Wzorek at a Boston fashion show, I modeled a beautiful lace rose dress. I absolutely fell in love with the design and wanted to do a photoshoot. Nicole then agreed to work together and we’ve been collaborating ever since. I loved getting my makeup done by the artists, always asking them how they got started in the makeup industry. I thought I was so cool how much time and preparation went into all modeling events. But as I got older, modeling became harder to handle. Being a young woman, having to hear so many peoples opinions telling you how to look, what to eat, what size you need to be. It got draining mentally physically and emotionally. I’ve always believed no one should feel like they have to live up to these unrealistic standards to feel beautiful or want a career in modeling. I remained positive and had my own sense of individuality if a designer wanted me to lose weight or change my appearance I wouldn’t work with them. I wanted people to know modeling isn’t always as glamours as it seems, so I did my senior project on how the media influences an ideal body image.

After I graduated, I stopped modeling and began to take a different turn to the industry and that was the makeup side. I went to Aveda Institute for Esthetics and started my own mobile beauty business calling myself Glam with Kam. I still do some modeling here and there for my local designer friends, I love getting the opportunities to do both makeup and modeling for a show. I feel powerful when I’m modeling so to give someone that power and confidence are an amazing feeling. Getting my esthetic license was the best decision I ever made, there is no better feeling than to empower women and to make them feel beautiful. I have done makeup for numerous weddings, proms, fashion shows and photoshoots. I truly love what I do and I’m beyond grateful for the opportunities that have to lead me to where I am today. My beauty business grows bigger every year and I’m constantly learning new techniques and adding new services to offer. I’m not only confident in what I do I’m passionate too.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle I’ve learned along my journey is that we live in a world full of judgment and criticism. Do not let other peoples opinions affect who you are as a person. Don’t feel like you have to change because someone doesn’t like something about you, learn to embrace your flaws and accept that everyone has their own, the only people’s opinion that should matter to you are yours and the people that love and support you. Don’t be discouraged when things don’t go how you planned, great things take time to grow, nurture and love yourself, Always be true to you so you can stay true to others. I believe we need more positivity in the world, be kind to others, support local businesses or just help empower the people around you to be better. Never stop learning or bettering yourself. most importantly NEVER give up no matter how hard things may get.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
One of my favorite books I’ve read this year was girl boss by Sophia Amoruso, really helped me to grasp the fact that not everything happens quickly. You have to work hard for what you want, be dedicated, determined and the worst thing you can do is quit when things get tough. As for apps, I love vagaro for a salon system, helps run Ch’i Lash very smoothly with client information, bookings, and checkouts!
