Meet Trailblazer Kat Hanafin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Hanafin.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I became a professional photographer ten years ago, but have been in love with it since I was mini. Back then, I had a small, black plastic camera which had been a promo item from my Dad’s job at P&G. On my first day with it, I blew through the first roll of film in no time. When I came back into the house, I proclaimed to my parents “I’m going to need a lot more film.”

Has it been a smooth road? Any advice for women just starting out?
Life is rarely a smooth road for most of us; I have had my ups and downs, which has made me a better person and a successful professional photographer.

My advice for women – do what you want to do – don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible or try to dissuade you in any way. Don’t let people talk you out of your dreams; you’re the only one who needs to believe in them.

We’d love to hear more about Kat Hanafin Photography.
All my work revolves around the ocean–between my Beach Family Sessions, Seaside Senior Portraits, and Nautical Weddings.

My signature “look” – I love the in-between moments most of all; glances between a newly married couple, or a dad consoling his two-year-old son, who thinks this particular hour of his life is the worst ever. The little moments in-between which are only witnessed by me… I document those for my clients.

While there are many aspects of my work I love, I consider my main objective as the documentarian of my client’s lives. Between families, I started shooting right in the beginning, who some are in college, to couples I shot their engagement sessions, and weddings, who now have families of their own – it’s completely magical. They’re a part of my heart, my clients, it makes me feel honored, and gives me such joy (when a family comes back to me.) And seeing the kids, year after year? man – it’s a really quite a phenomenal feeling.

My special bond to my seaside town of Scituate is quite unique. I especially love the working waterfront, which I have been documenting since my photography classes in high school. I also donate to many local Scituate and South Shore charities – giving back to this community I love so much is important to me. Plus, since I’ve been here for a million years, I have lots of secret shooting locations!

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Absolutely! As an artist, one whose primary goal is to show the emotion and intricacies of love and family, I think I’m more able to, as a woman. I don’t just see things people don’t see – I feel them. I aim to capture those emotions – to show the rest of the world what that love between the couple or the family looks like. A love which was once only known between few is now known to many.
