Meet Trailblazer Kamilah Gonzales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamilah Gonzales.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Quincy, MA. Ever since I was little, my dream was to be on TV. In 4th grade, I remember auditioning for a new TV show at WGBH. There were so many kids in the room and the place was filled with excitement. After that experience, the dream slowly drifted away.

Many years later, I was working as a waitress and one of the customers from my table approached me. She gave me her card and told me to contact her if I ever wanted to do a photo shoot because her husband was a professional photographer. It wasn’t until then, that I thought about modeling. It would be something new and there would be nothing to lose if I gave it a shot. Unfortunately, later that night, I lost her card. Fortunately, I was able to reconnect with her after running into her photo while online shopping. We set up a shoot and I’ve been shooting ever since.

A few months later, I got signed to Click Models and then transitioned to signing with Model Club Inc. I was able to book a few commercial gigs with my agency, which reignited my acting bug and desire to learn and gain more experience in the industry. A year and a half later, I moved across the country to Los Angeles, CA. I got signed to a commercial agent, joined an acting studio, and am continuing to grow my connections and network.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting out, it was a little difficult trying to navigate my way in finding reliable photographers and setting up collaborations. However, it became easier as my portfolio grew. The struggle I face right now is finding a modeling agency in LA that will sign a petite Asian American woman. As a group, we are underrepresented, but I am hopeful that that will change soon.

I advise young women to create your own path. Embrace who you are and don’t try to fit into any mold. Explore and really search for what sets your soul on fire. Drown out the noise and follow your heart. Write down your goals and do something every day that will put you closer to those goals. It’s true when they say, “nothing worth it comes easy.” While you’re young, time is on your side and don’t let it pass you by. From my experiences I’ve learned to not be discouraged by those who tell you “no,” keep pushing and believe in yourself because there is bound to be one person that will say “YES”.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I am a model, Brand Ambassador, bartender, and an aspiring actress. It’s not often that I look back and reflect on my accomplishments but I am proud of myself for coming out to LA to pursue my career and dreams. It took a little while to adjust but the decision to jump was well worth it. My friends and family are my backbones and I would not be here without their love and support.

What sets me apart from others is my personality. I say what’s on my mind, I’m unapologetic, and I laugh too often. I love talking to people and hearing their stories. There are so many people that I’ve met that have really inspired me through their kindness and words. There’s so much beauty in the world. We are all alike but different in our own ways and I just wish more people would be more openminded and see the world the way I see it.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
A lot of my networking has been through Facebook. Whether they are acting, modeling or Brand Ambassador gigs, I am able to meet a lot of people in the same industry that share advice and share the same experiences as I do. From those connections, I have been able to book additional work and create friendships. It’s important to build strong relationships with the people around you. Put yourself out there and be your genuine self.
