Today we’d like to introduce you to Justine Freeman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been doing hair for almost 10 years. I have assisted at 3 salons and been a stylist at 2, which has given me a lot of education and perspective on the way the industry works! I worked at a salon during school as an assistant and after graduating I moved to Jeffrey Robert Salon in Worcester. After training for a year, I earned by the chair! After about a year and spending a lot of time in Boston, I decided it was time for bigger and better! Because it was far away, much of my clientele couldn’t follow so I had start over again as an assistant at James Joseph Salon on Newbury Street. I assisted for over two years and it was well worth it because the education and the people made me the stylist I am today. I now live back home in Worcester and I rent my own chair at the most charming salon in Oxford, MA!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was not easy sometimes having to start over after feeling like you had already been through that portion of your career, but if you want it bad enough and you are capable of seeing the bigger Picture it is well worth it! In the broad spectrum of things one or two years is nothing compared to all the years to come, and all you’re doing is perfecting your craft! Also, stay humble! Even if you’ve been given a hard time, it doesn’t mean someone else deserves to be treated that way. Just love what you do.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hair by Justine at Shagged – what should we know?
I specialize in color, especially blondes. It’s where I’m most creative and it’s also my bread and butter. I’m most proud of when I do a seamless balayage and it looks flawless curly and most importantly straight! Now working for myself I am able to use any color line I desire and that gives me opportunities for even more stunning results.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
My parents were always supportive of me no matter what I chose to do! And instilled good work ethic in me.
Pricing:
- Being out in Oxford I am much more affordable than Boston! Full balayage or highlight including cut and toner is in between 150 and 200$.
