Meet Trailblazer Elza Rosa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elza Rosa.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Elza. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Wow… my story is really long but will keep it short. I’ve been doing hair all my life unless I was too lazy, I would go to a salon which required lots of my time in one day.

Way back when, I had a friend who said to me that I should work at a salon but my answer was “Me… nahhhh, I will never do someone’s else hair”, so life went on and I lived my life and raised my three beautiful children working in medical billing until the day I was laid off which was very hard to take in but took the time to reflect and figure out which door to open next to start all over again. I actually had a great summer that year and lots of things were in mind on how and where to go next for which hairstylist was one but wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it until my best friend said that I should definitely go for it since it was a natural thing for me.

After a nice convo, I signed up with Mansfield Beauty School in Quincy. After getting the certificate, I applied at Supercuts and worked there for 2 years, but it wasn’t what I wanted to do, so I moved on to DryBar Chestnut Hill location to try it and see where it would take me, and let me just say just doing Blowouts all day which different textures and types of hair gave me a new direction on where I want to do with my new career. Now, within all these new things happening to me, I reconnected with an old friend who was going to launch her own fashion line and I’m sure you know her… Angelica Timas, so we met up and I came on board to be the extra hand and help out. Her first show was amazing and beautiful even though I only assisted it felt like home to me and I wanted to do more.

Since then, we’ve worked on NYFW, BFW and some really amazing fashion shows and photo shoots and other projects and through her, I’ve also collaborated with amazing fashion stylists, photographers for which some of the beautiful work has been featured on different magazines. But with all that happening and Loving every moment of it I wanted more but something was holding me back and that something required me to step back again and reevaluate where I want to take this new career. So, today, you are looking at an entrepreneur, I opened my own little salon studio in Needham.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing in life is smooth, but to be honest, it’s been a fun experience with ups and downs with lots of headaches and loss of sleep but with so much love and affection in my craft that I wouldn’t change anything.

As for advice to the new or old generation out there, follow your passion and don’t look back. “Stick with it and it will grow” that’s what I say to myself every day.

We’d love to hear more about Elza Rosa.
I’m a licensed cosmetologist. I focus more on hairstyling. I am known to give amazing Blowouts with a round brush. I love doing different creation with hair and would love to get into Avant-garde styling. I feel that the one thing that sets me apart is my consistency in my work.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I don’t really have a “mentor” when it comes to hairstyling. We live in a world now where if you want to learn something or find something, we just Google it or watch YouTube. Sad to say, but just being honest.
