Today we’d like to introduce you to Edwens Joseph.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Edwens. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am an independent recording artist from Boston, MA. I specialize particularly in hip hop music for the past 5 years and I go by the name of GodSend. In July of 2017 I release my first solo project titled “GodSend EP” which is available now on many digital music platforms including, iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon Prime, and many more. I released this project through my independent label, Audio Tamers, LLC which was founded in 2016. I am also one quarter of the Boston-based hip hop group BME MRKT Boyz. My music entails the fruits of our labor as well as my aspirations being a product of a broken neighborhood and community and the harsh realities that go along with them and where I am now in this journey. I love to entertain. I’ve done countless shows at many venues across the country including South by South West (SXSW) which is an annual film & music festival where artist come from all over the country and world to bring their talents to Austin, TX. In addition to the music I also do love to give back to the community. I accept clothing and shoes for the homeless and as soon as these donations accumulate to a copious amount myself and my cousin, Shirley would make plans to strategically distribute them in areas where homelessness is at a high rate. So far we’ve distributed goods in Lynn, Ma which has one of the highest homeless populations in the state. I feel as if it is always important to give back in some way, shape, or form; even for the have nots.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is ever a smooth sail in this business. I feel as if branding is one of the more difficult aspects to it. While it is great to have good music, good music alone is not sufficient to becoming a successful artist and for people to become aware of you. It is imperative to understand your market and to have a plan to get your content in front of the people that are already looking for you. My advice to other artists and entrepreneurs is to first perfect your craft. Once you perfected your craft you must learn how to market your products or services and a lot of times unless you understand how to target your audience, you will have to pay for marketing and promotional services. In my opinion here is no way around this. Another aspect that I’ve come to realized is that most of your supporters will be people who you’ve never met before in your life. Don’t rely on friends and family to support you. The fact of the matter is that while your friends and family may love you and want the best for you, statistics show that the least amount of support comes from this group. Strangers and new faces are your best friends when it comes to growing your business.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about GodSend – what should we know?
I am a recording artist first. I actually record my own music where I live and I do some basic mixing for myself on Pro Tools. I usually send the record off to my engineer who then properly masters the record and puts in his finishing touches. We’ve been working with an engineer who goes by the name of Cypress Muzik for the past few years and he does phenomenal work. I hope to acquire more knowledge about the engineering process. I am proud of how self-sufficient and resilient we are as a group. We all have different styles and are able to paint pictures with our lyrics. We also have the ability to appeal to different age groups. We can rap about how hard we partied the night before at the club on one song and then rap about purchasing real estate on another. We have no limitations when it comes to content matter and we will make it sound good.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
My mother really inspires me. In the 70’s she immigrated to the US from Port au Prince, Haiti with only one small suitcase with a few belongings. She is now a successful RN who works very hard up until this day, she also owns several properties across the state. She encourages me everyday to push further and to become the best version of myself. I would do anything she asks of me.
